Default Question about crank gear and key pin (Helms picture included). Very confusing.

I have the engine out on the stand and am trying to get the timing belt back on so I can finally drop it back in. It's been a long time since I've messed with it which is the main problem (my memory sucks) and have ordered essentially all new parts (it's a new shortblock as well).

My question is in regards to the crank gear for the timing belt and the nessecary items that go with it.

In the picture above I have parts 19, 15, 16, 17, 18. The problem is this only includes one key pin as show in the picture (item 19) which has to be used by either the Crank pulley itself or the crank gear. Without a key pin in either they'll be able to freely rotate on the crankshaft.

The weird thing is looking at a B16 diagram the crank gear has a tooth the sticks out that slides into the slot on the crank instead of using a key pin. Visually it's basically like the B18C5 gear with the key pin built in.

So my questions are.

1. Why isn't the C5 like the B16 crank gear which seems to be a much easier design.

2. Since it's not why does the diagram only have 1 key pin? You obviously need two.

3. In the picture above why does it show an alternate crank gear (part 14) and why is it flanked by two washers (parts 16) instead of just one like right below it. Are there two versions of the crank pulley because part 14 and 15 are obviously different?

4. What are all the parts I need on the crank, and in what order, to make things right?

alternate crank gear is OBD1... no CKF sensor mount on the oil pump, and the difference between OBD1 oil pumps and OBD2.

OBD1 crank gears do have built in key. which makes it really nice when you weld on a socket and now have a cheap tool to rotate the crank and still be able to see the TDC mark on the oil pump housing/OBD2 gear without the damn crank pully torqued on. HTH.

edit:

{3. In the picture above why does it show an alternate crank gear (part 14) and why is it flanked by two washers (parts 16) instead of just one like right below it. Are there two versions of the crank pulley because part 14 and 15 are obviously different?}

OBD 2 crank gear has a 'built in' washer on the backside (integral to the indicating tangs for the hall effect (CKF) sensor) ... only one convex washer is required to center the timing belt when using this OBD2 crank gear. Comprende?

1. C5 and Current B16 Crank Gears is identical. Their part number is "13621-P72-A01 PULLEY". To reiterate what D has mentioned, the differences is OBDII engines use the Crankshaft Fluctuation Sensor CKF. This wasn't an issue about ease of design, rather an issue to meet certain emissions regulations set forth by the EPA.

2. If you select the part in the catalog, it shows one picture but Quantity of Two.

3. There are two versions. An OBDI version and an OBDII version that pertains to that particular diagram in the catalog. It is much easier for data entry and database to have one picture and have certain parts apply or not apply to the diagram. The Parts Diagram is for "illustration purposes only" and is not an exact representation of that particular motor.

4. 90704-634-000 KEY (4.5X11.0) x 2; 13622-PR3-000 PLATE x 1; 13621-P72-A01 PULLEY x 1

Nice to see the some og's still lurk so they can lay down the science from time to time.
