I dunno what the freakin problem is. I seriously almost went apeshit on my car. Ive had the trans out twice now, and cant figure it out. Basically when I put the trans back in, I have no neutral. I can move the shifter to neutral, but when I let out the clutch, its grabbing like its in a gear. I seem to be able to select gears with the shifter with no problem, except for reverse which has always been a little bit of a pain. If I put it in a gear, let out the clutch, it grabs like normal. When I put the clutch back in to take it out of that gear, its very hard to pull it out of gear back to neutral.

I have no idea what is causing this. The clutch looks fine, feels fine, there is no noise or odd stiffness. We even bled it. The trans went back together with no problem, snap ring locked in place, all shims and washers in place, shift forks and change assembly seems normal, set screws good, shift fork and TO bearing normal, dowel pins slid in just like every other time. I even test shifted it on the bench once the case was on and had no problem hitting the gears.

Im pretty sure at this point its clutch related, but have no idea why. The clutch was fine previous to pulling the trans the first time. It drove fine, shifted fine, except 4th gear was toast. The only reason I think its clutch related is because when in neutral, I can slowly control how hard the clutch is biting. If I let the clutch all the way out it will stall, exactly like if you let the clutch out while in 1st and give it no gas. I took off the dust boot, and you can see the clutch appears to be operating normally.

I do have two questions though: Could this be caused by putting 5th gear on upside down on the countershaft? Im gonna search around for pics of 4th/5th gear on the countershaft and compare to mine. Or could this be diff related? Both times when putting the trans back in, it was very difficult putting the passenger side axle back in the diff, almost like it was hitting something and you really had to jam it in there several times before it finally went.

I'm trying to understand how it could be clutch related, if it's BITING in neutral position? That doesn't make a bit of sense... I've never heard of anything like this, pretty crazy.

Even when my clutch disc completely shattered, I had neutral just fine.

when I have my foot on the clutch, in neutral position, the clutch disk is not touching the flywheel. so the trans is not spinning with the motor. when I start to let out the clutch, still in neutral, the clutch is starting to engage the flywheel and the trans wants to spin. I think I can feel it trying to pull the car. you think it could be locked in a gear somehow? this is what makes me wonder if 5th gear is upside down and basically engaged even though the shifter and snychro sleeves are in neutral position.

I think Im actually gonna try to drive it tomorrow the way it is. I think Ill be able to drive it, at least around the neighborhood, without neutral. if I can get it going and get up to speed for 5th gear, I may be able to just put it in neutral and see if its still engaged in 5th, which would mean I have 5th gear upside down.

If I put it up on the stands, and put the car in neutral, but the wheels still try to spin, then that means gears are engaged somewhere correct? it has to be 5th gear....

My thoughts as well.... very very weird! I am waiting for D to chime in. He is the Tranny guru if i had to label someone that title. Fugg... Ryan you mise welll go ahead and pm him. He will be able to help you... serialously0.

Don't go blowin'er up just yet. Sounds like you just need to fix a smaller issue rather than a big one.

I've had those feelings before... Bad feelings to have. I acted on those feelings once, expect I was staring at the entire car... Yeah, very stupid mistake, costed my pocket big time.

I didnt touch the clutch. only removed the tranny to replace 4th gear with an identical ITR 4th gear. and clutch engagement/disengagement hasnt changed, its still in the same place of pedal travel as before.

Don't drive it. Walk away from it for a day or two, then later on when you're not pissed pull it apart and recheck everything.

.....iirc, sackdz had a similar problem (if I'm understanding you correctly).

Basically, he had the syncro's on 5th on backwards so the car would die in any gear once you let the clutch out.

My post were the same as they currently are, I guess people just view them different when they think you have an "89 civic slamed on 19s - 75 Dry Shot - Bomex body kit - Port and Polished VTEC solenoid" It was humorous to see how many people took it seriously.

If you put the car on jack stands and the wheels spin slightly in Neutral- the pilot bearing can cause this. If the car really wants to move with the clutch out in neutral then there is an issue.

If you happened to accidentally swap the 5th/Rev. upper and lower Brass syncro rings or put the synchro hub on upside down then you certainly would experience what you are describing.

The longer brass teeth go on top and the shallower lock groove should be facing the longer toothed synchro and the taper bearing. That's the tapered collar that the Reverse synchro slows against. The endcase bearing sits atop the taper bearing.

As for the axle trouble.. A worn snap ring is usually the culprit. Try hanging the ring with the "C" facing up like a U. Use some thick grease (High temp Urea, axle grease, vaseline,whatever) to help keep the ring closer to centered on the shaft. This will give the best chance of inserting the axle with the least effort.
