Oil Pressure and Oil Temp at Track
I just installed oil temp and oil pressure gauges in the car (finaly). Pics will be coming very shortly. Having run only the stock gauges until now I do not really know the normal temps and pressure.
What is a normal operating oil pressure and temp while on the track?
What is a temp threshold that I do not want to go over, knowing something is going wrong?
thanks

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temp at Track (BlueR)
Welcome back . Seems like forever since your last ITR forum post.
My oil temp can reach 280 on track. I have considered an oil cooler for that reason. However, I'm not sure how bad, if at all, that temp is. Some of the turblow guys **cough, Chris F, cough** have felt OK with anything under 300 .
As for pressure, 80psi, give or take a couple psi, seems to be standard at WOT.
Now, SHOW US THAT BLING

forget the high pressure reading, the concern is with the low point in pressure...so set that little red arrow at the low side, 20 psi?

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temp at Track (Haleiwa-Brando)
Oil Pressure = 75-80 PSI WOT
Oil Temperature = you should try to keep it in the 210-230 Fahrenheit range. If you go above that you are losing power.
My setup: 230whp built GS-R and i am seeing 225 with a 24 row oil cooler. I also run a oil filter remote system. I typically average 25 minute sessions at any give HPDE letting the car cool off in between sessions.
Another item you should monitor very closely and it would be a good idea to get an accurate gauge is your water temperature.

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temp at Track (EleanoR)
75 psi at WOT
If I remember correctly, around 25 psi idling with warm engine
About 210-230F with a 19 row cooler with 12:1CR and 110 octane

at 900rpm it should be at 22psi, give or take of course.
After reading the other posts it looks like I need an oil cooler

Though I don't have my pressure and temp guages installed YET, with my current setup on track here in FL on the stock temp guage, it's ALWAYS one hash mark before halfway. Once I have factual data, I can advise.

The "one notch before halfway" is normal. I'll connect the laptop to the ECU (S300) and let you know what actual temp that corresponds to.

Re: (Tomcat)
I know water temperature should be under 210.
Oil Pressure at WOT (like others had said) 80 PSI.
Oil Pressure under 300F? Thats a pretty broad statement. The statement of "losing power" is vague too. How and where did you get that from. Not tearing your comment apart but how do you come to that conclusion? Im not an HT ITR **** by any means. Your reply just intrigues me.

Fixed .
I would really like to know the "optimal" temp for oil while on the track. It would seem that 280 is too high. Would it damage anything? Would this promote vescocity(sp?) breakdown?

oil pressure- 70psi (80 w/o oil cooler)
oil temp-230-240 if im realy running it hard.
b&m oil cooler kit with remote filter set-up.
w/o cooler i'd see close to or over 300*. i know john was seeing high oil temp at slummit durring those hot summer days.
your rev limit and gearing also come into play. the more time you spend in the high rpm the higher your oil temp will be.

i saw 290 on nice day at summit main. i had to stay out of vtec to get the temp to drop. if your planning to track the car get a temp and pressure gauge and put a cooler in. you will want to callit a day once u see the temps shooting up.
at watkins it was around 250 with no cooler...
i just added a cooler so ill see how this year is..

To clarify a few things.......
Oil pressure has nothing to do with how open your throttle is (WOT). It's a function of a few things, including:
Engine RPM
Oil Viscosity (changes with temperature)
Spring in the oil bypass
There's an oil bypass that'll cap the oil pressure around 85-90, you'll likely never see it go above that. You'll see it get close to that on cold startups.
When your oil is "Really hot" you'll see it lower, pretty consistently. Todd Reid mentioned a decent rule of thumb, 10 PSI per 1000 RPM. If you're seeing it drop to 60-70 at high RPM, you might take a look at your oil temp gauge (or some bearings are getting sloppy, or your oil pump is dying)
As far as oil temp, Scott Rinde told me the best thing to do is put some tape over the gauge so you don't see it. 300 is no big deal for a synthetic oil. I don't know what happens after 315. On the street, 180-220 is typical.
