Icon6 No reverse gear..could it be...?

Hi

As you all may know, I took my Teg up to Fuji Motor Speedway a couple of weekends ago. During my last run, I lost fifth gear so I pulled into the pit area to see what the problem might be. As I try to back the car into the garage, I noticed that I lost reverse as well.

We pushed the car into the garage and jacked it up to see if I could notice anything visually wrong with the car. As far as I could see, nothing seemed to be wrong with the shift linkage (no visible kinks or bends). With the motor off, I was able to shift from 1 through 4 gears smoothly, but fifth and reverse gears wouldn't go in (no grinding or anything, as if they didn't exist).

On the drive home from the track, I was able to recover fifth gear while driving on the expressway, but reverse was still gone (still felt as if it didn't exist). After doing some research, I found some people who had similar problems, and they were to solve it by replacing all the motor mounts. So, I checked my motoor mounts and found that the rubber bushings in he left lower motor mount was completely broken. I checked the other motor mounts(except for the rear one which is too buried to inspect), and as far as I could see, they all look okay.

My question:

1. Could a single bad motor mount (specifically the left lower one) cause me to lose reverse gear?

2. If not, could a bad rear mount affect the shifting?

3. If its not the motor mount, what else could it be? (clutch has less than 10K kilometers on it, and gear oil is fairly new..I think)

Digest:
-did some road racing at the track
-lost fifth and reverse gears
-recovered fifth gear the same day; reverse still gone
-no visible problems with the linkage
-left lower motor mount broken; all others seems to be okay (rear mount condition is unknown)

all comments welcomed.

Are you using an aftermarket shifter/bushings?
Maybe with the bad mount you're just short on the reach to get it into gear/reverse?

Just a thought, sort of remembering Jack's "no reverse gear" thread from somewhere.
Or, disconnect the linkage/pin and see if you can get it into gear manually directly onto the transmission (to see if its a fork issue, etc).

P.S. how's the boost and braking, on track?

boost and braking were really good. I was having a really good run until fifth gave out.

I was thinking fork too but I don't know how to get to it.

I was looking for that thread as well...if you find it let me know.

What a minute, when you say forks, areyou referring to the ones in the gear box?

Hi

I had this problem a while ago. I misshifted into 3rd gear and I hit my shifter between 3rd and 5th gear. for some reason I was locked out of reverse and I couldn't do anything about it at the time.

I researched on the net some and I spoke with a guy who knows a lot about preludes....he has rebuilt a lot of crap on his car and he had the same thing happen to him. He had come up with a fix for it.

here is the fix.

Go to an empty parking lot with nothing in front of you or behind you. Push the clutch in and try pushing the car into reverse slowly and steadily. While you are pushing the shifter into reverse slowly rev the engine up a hair....and release the clutch slowly like you are taking off in reverse. You may here a little grinding but the shifter will pop into gear. If it doesn't, repeat the procedure above and stay calm. Once you get the shifter into reverse.....it will most likely be stuck in reverse....do the same method above to get it out of reverse. After a couple of times of doing this method the tranny should work itself out and everything should be fine.

I know about this problem and I have done this on a number of occassions. This only works when the you try to put the car into reverse and the gear grinds. When this happens, you use the clutch to sync the gears abit and then it will pop into reverse...right?

But this isn't my problem. My gears don't grind at all. Its as if everything is out of alignment or as if I don't have reverse at all. The reverse lights don't even come on. I am going to try to put it into gear by disengaging the shift lever from the shift linkage to see if the alignment is out of wack. Hopefully this works or otherwise it means I really f'd something up.

i would do what zyg suggested, disconnect the linkage, and use a screw driver or something to manually move the shift rod on the tranny to see if you can hit all the gears. if you can then you know the problem isnt internal and its likely an issue with the geometry of the linkage due to either the busted mount or shift bushings or something.

Default Re: No reverse gear..could it be...?

its not hard. the hardest part is probably removing the bitch pin.

support and secure the car (jackstands or ramps if you can fit under there). just leave the car in neutral. get under the car, remove the metal clip and bitch pin and move the linkage out of the way. then youll see the shift rod poking out of the trans. stick a screw driver or something through the hole and move the rod in and out and side to side like if you were shifting the car. i like to use a stubby screw driver, seems to make it easier to move the rod around.

if you pull the rod OUT towards the back of the car, and rotate it to each side you can engage 1st, 3rd, and 5th. if you push the rod IN and rotate it to each side you can engage 2nd, 4th and reverse. youll see what I mean once you get under there. just remember you are under the car, so the shifting pattern is a little backwards.

this post sounds rather pornographic lol

I can tell you what your problem is because I just fixed it on my 98 ITR. Your 5th gear/reverse shift collar is toast. The above idea (jamming in it in gear) is not going to help except make things worse. The only true way to fix this is pull the tranny and replace the shift collar. If you want more info pm me and I can walk you thru the process.

Fifth gear works. All forward gears shift smoothly; its the reverse that doesn't work. I suspect that its either the bushings or the broken mount or a combination of both. When I lost fifth gear at the track, the shifter felt a bit odd, as if everything had shifted to the right. First and second gear was where third and fourth should be, and fifth just didn't exist at all. Everything felt really notchy too. But after fiddling with it a bit everything went back to its normal position and I was able to get fifth back, but not reverse.

I didn't have time to get a good look at the bushings or the undo the bitch pin and manually testing the shifting as suggested above, but I will try it next weekend. If that doesn't go right, then I will know something's screwed internally. Unfortunately, rebuilding a tranny cost like $3,000 for parts and labor, so I'm hoping that its not that serious.

Worst case scenario is that you'll need a 5-R synchro set and maybe a 5th gear. I'd say about $130 for the synchro set and $60 for the gear, if you need it. It's also the easiest synchro set and gear to replace; no gear pulling necessary and it's right on top of the shaft.

Default Re: No reverse gear..could it be...?

finally found out the problem. It was a blown 5/R sleeve (selector?). Their were flat spots on the gears on the reverse side which was preventing it from sliding into reverse. So I had them replace the 5/R sleeve and 1-5 syncros (while the gear box was opened up). Hopefully this improves the notchy shifting that I had been experiencing lately.

did you notice this thread was 2 years old lol ..... i would like to just take a guess from readying what happened to this guy....

could be bent or messed up shifter cables, otherwise your looking at synchros, sleeves and other internal transmission parts.

Just to answer this post, my care had a shredded reverse gear. Had to get it replaced...$1500 for labor to replace a $40 part

Damn.

Could the bad mount have lead to the gear destruction? I assume that the reverse idler gear was destroyed.
