*edit* This post is about the <u>Friction Modified</u> version of GM's Synchromesh. It is NOT about the regular Synchromesh fluid, either from GM or from Pennzoil

Yup. Called up my buddy yesterday at the big local Chevy dealer, looking for some Friction Modified Synchromesh before I pull my engine out. He brought out 3 quarts of the regular Synchromesh, and told me that the Friction Modified version is being phased out.

So I took the regular stuff, and then just as I got down the street aways he called me back and said he found some Friction Modified fluid.

So I went back and decided to buy all 6 quarts they had left, for the most excellent price of $51

So I guess if you use it and want to keep using it, or if you've been wanting to try it, you better call around to your local GM dealers and try to stock up now before they get rid of it.

A little history: I've been using GM Synchromesh Friction Modified fluid in my GS-R transmission for about 100,000 miles now, changing it about every 25K miles or so. My transmission has 260K+ total miles on it, still with all original internals, and it still shifts flawlessly, even with my short shifter, even in single-digit temperatures on cold mornings. It is by far the best fluid I've ever used.

Mods I'm cross-posting this in several forums so that everyone will see it.

All day.

My parts manager just called into whoever he calls for parts availability. It currently shows no sign of being discontinued. The warehouse quantity are extremely high currently, so if they are going to discontinue, stock now.

From what I hear, it is similiar to the Pennzoil with Friction Modifier. Please note that if the product does not have the "Friction Modified", you are not comparing an apple to an apple.

I thought the penzoil stuff was the same, I am planning to put the penzoil brand in when I change out all fluids before HPDE season.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is a replacement for GM's Synchromesh.

It is NOT the same as the friction modified stuff.

I only have experience with the friction modified stuff and it has been nothing but awesome for the past 100K miles. I can't say anything about any other fluid, other than Honda MTF which I used before I switched to GM SM FM.

*edit* migs I supposed the warehouse quantity could be high because GM isn't really using it much anymore in any of their vehicles. At one point (several years ago) I think my buddy told me that the only vehicles using it at that time were a certain model of S-10 pickup w/ manual tranny and some Corvettes. That's just going from my memory, though.

That sucks to here I went from the pennzoil trans fluid to the GM fluid and the difference was insane!

Do NOT USE Penzoil's formula!
I can't begin to describe how bad it is. On my last PDX weekend I went through Penzoil, GM Synchromesh FM, Royal Purple, and Honda MTF

My 3rd gear synchro's were shot, and I was desperate to find something that would help the tranny make it through the rest of the weekend.
(Didn't know it was going me problems until after the first run).
My friend used it in his 06 Type S and was experiencing very nothcy shifting after the fluid swap. We both ditched the Penziol immediately.

Penzoil sucked **** and was grinding like a ****.
Royal Purple didn't seem to be as good as below.
Honda MTF (New Formula) = GM Synchromesh FM
Both the Honda MTF and Synchromesh feel the same to me.

I replaced the 3 /4 sleeve set and run Honda MTF now.

Just get the Amsoil... It comes with Syncromesh already in it. not to be "phased" out either.

damn this sucks, the GM synchromesh and FM has been a savior for me. I have since switched to Pennzoil because its cheaper and the same as GM synchromesh, but its not the same as the FM.

Got any info on this? How did you come to that conclusion?

I'll go back to Honda MTF (after I use these 6 quarts of SM FM I just bought) if this is true.... if I'm still driving my car, as it would have over 300K miles by then

Really? I am an Acura dealer tech, and we use the GM fluid if the tranny feels a little notchy with the updated Honda MTF. Makes a world of difference.

What is this new MTF like? Is it thin? Someone said he heard it was thin like water, but if that were the case then it wouldn't be a 5w30 fluid, which is what Honda transmissions require.

honda new mtf is very thin like water, its not very thick at all... havent really heard about it being like gm synchromesh but you never know.. ill look on in to see what it really say about it...

uhh, no. I think he meant, "if the tranny feels a little notchy when using the updated Honda MTF, we will then use the GM fluid."

I thought the FM version was being replaced by a newer formula(read on another forum)...I'll see if I can find more on it
