Hey all,

My JDM-R engine has about 220k on it and I'm starting to consider a rebuild in the next year or two. I burn through about a quart every 1k or so (on Maxlife 10w30), so I figure that something's not sealing as well as it should.

Anyways, I've been looking up all the information as to which direction I should head, but I've got an embarrassing, kinda stupid question. If I plan to have the block resleeved and bored (probably by RS Machines since they're local), how do I go about getting the engine disassembled and removed from the car?

I know where I'd bring the car if I wanted a motor swap, but this situation has me stumped. If I go to a local performance shop, they could tear out the motor, but then I'd have to tow my engine-less car home, then back to the shop again for the re-install. Is that how it's typically done?

It seems like nobody talks about this aspect of it on the all motor forum. I'm assuming they're removing everything themselves, but I don't have the space/***** to really tear down a whole engine.

Your best bet might be to get some of your more mechanical inclined buddies to help out if you're feeling intimidated by doing it by yourself. Tempt them with some booze, or whatever other compensation they would like (Which I guarantee will be cheaper than getting a shop to do it). It'll help give valuable experience and knowledge, and can only help a friendship.

Thanks, but that won't work. I'm the most mechanically inclined one out of my buddies, haha.

Besides for suspension work, the only engine-related tasks I've tackled are valve lash adjustments. Truthfully, I don't have the same amount of free time that I used to in my early 20s.

Sounds like having a shop do it may be your best bet.

Just to give you a guideline since you are strapped for time, the first time I yanked an engine took about half a day with help from one of my good friends who was semi mechanically inclined. The first time I tore down an engine sitting on an engine stand took maybe 4 hours. A lot of the time was spent taking pictures, packing, and labelling. Hope that helps.

This is always the worst part about rebuilds, how and where to do it. A shop will charge a small fortune and won't respect the car the same way you do aka hack it apart and back together. Do the research and have someone who knows what they're doing help. It's a learning experience.

If it were me, I'd have no choice but have a shop do it as I wouldn't trust myself to take on a project way above my head

That being said, if it were me, I'd find a shop that appreciates the R, places that do a lot of import cars, or have a reputation on the track etc...

Ask, who is good mechanic?

I did and was able to watch a guy use a tire and a can of spray silicone to pull my motor, in my garage.
