It is a little pole that raises up with a light on it. Its purpose is so you can see exactly where the front of your car is when you are parking in a cramped spot. Pretty useless, IMO.

Useless? I think it's ingenious. Hell, a good number of people could definitely use the help with parallel parking.

It is a good idea however, the US parking spots are a lot larger than the ones in Japan.

That's waaaay too much. And useless at the same time. I heard it comes bundled together with curb feelers.

Yes it makes it alot easier to leave those tiny *** parking spots. However, this habit can be linked to Japanese customs regarding shoes.
When entering a japanese home, it is customary to remove your shoes and then arrange your shoes so that the toes are facing toward the door so that when you are ready to leave, your shoes are ready to go. Boo-yah! So for the Japanese, it inherently makes sense to park a car ready to roll out from the parking spot.

I saw pics that one guy on HT took form Japan, and in every pic every single person was backed in. At like shopping centers and stuff. So I just assumed they have a thing for backing in

I'm currently living in Japan and I can tell you that 99.999999% of the cars here are reversed into parking stalls.

wow, what part of Japan are you living in? last time i visited japan (okayama, kyoto, kobe, hiroshima in april of this year) the vast majority of the cars were parked in FORWARDS. in fact, EVERY TIME i traveled in a car, we parked FORWARD in a spot.
unfortunately for the sake of this argument, out of the hundreds of photos i took, only a small percentage were of JDM vehicles, and most of those pictures are just of regular streets, etc, where there are either no parking spaces or all parallel parking spaces. so, all i have is my memory to back me up.
both of these pics are from Okayama.
dunno if this counts since it was one of those mechanized things, but they are reversed (meaning im wrong, eh?).
in front of the bowling alley...
but meh, Reid, i'm sure you can go out and take 50 photos and post them up about parking lots that are filled with reverse parking. so, if so, then you'll have proved me wrong, eh?
......and wasnt this thread about parallel parking?
anyway, this is why HT is filled with douchebags, it always ends up in a flame fest. all im sayin' is i saw a lot of cars parked frontwards. that's it. as i heard a black guy once say to me in the mission district, "CHILL *****!"
ok one last picture from Japan...in closing....chill out *************

Re: JDM Parking Pole? (ssmdc2)
When I see parking aids (back up sensors) on sports cars it makes me wonder about the driver's skill. IMO, If you need stuff like that for your sports car, you must really suck.
I saw one on an S2k and I was like 'wtf? and it is a convertible too!'
