how many itr swaps do you think is legit out there?
okay, i just saw 3 threads saying how someone swaped a ITR (b18c5) motor into their civic...or their friends civic...etc...
my question is, how many swaps do you think are stolen opposed to legitimately swapped in?
I imagined ITR swaps would NOT be this common, but apparently it is.
I'm guessing about a 1:2 ratio, 1 stolen for every 2 legitimate...and i think im on the conservative side...
cars that have been stolen, the motor is ID as salvaged. so a shady business or two could really write legitimate papers for these motors...
So basically, legit papers does not insure that the motor itself is legit... this is upsetting to me atleast
if you guys dont care about this, no need to reply, i just thought i'd get a serious conversation going.

Fuggin thieves, i say about half are legit, the other half are shady. But sometimes the owners dont even know it. They just bought the engine from some shop or person who said it was legit.

Depends on where you are. In NYC about 25% are legit, but in Dallas about 75%. Just guessing tho

I don't think there are as many stolen R motor swaps as most people think there are. 1 stolen for ever 2 legit?? No way. There aren't nearly enough stolen R's, or probably even R's produced, for the amount of swaps that take place.
It's impossible to get any hard numbers. But, when you read a thread about some dude getting his ITR jacked you think to yourself and remember 'Damn!.' And how many threads do you specifically remember dealing with an ITR swap? Countless.
Yeah, it sucks that ITRs are stolen. Yes, they're used for parts. No, not ever person with a swapped R motor is using one that was stolen.
My two cents. Bah.

I have an ITR swap in a Del Sol.. unfortunately the ITR parts came from my ITR..
I know a few people in NYC with ITR swaps in Civics. Two of them got their engine from JDM front clips and paid an ungodly amount of money for it. The other one, somehow the engine just appeared in his garage.

What i'm saying is, there arent so many ITR's in the US! sure, people ship those motors in...but even in JDM land, these cars get stolen too...
regardless in any event, I just cant see where all these swaps are coming out of legitimately...there arent so many ITR's being crashed....

Here in NYC you will fry for a hot engine swap, salvaged vin's will always have a "stolen flag" attached to them if the theft recovery was never cleared through the insurance company and local pd. In other words, if your ITR/GSR/SI is stolen, stripped and then a gutted shell is recovered by the police. You and/or the bank will be settled, and the car will retain "stolen" status in law enforcement databases as well as c.l.u.e. reports. Lets say you bought the gutted shell back from the ins co. Your vin would then be cleared of a "stolen flag" and register as a salvaged title vehicle, that is worth .50 cents on the dollar of fair retail value. Once assembled and roadworthy again.

h-pimp: so basically if you buy back your gutted shell, w/o the motor ,etc in it....the stolen motor becomes salvaged without a "stolen" flag?
that bites! i'm sure there are auctioneers that the insurance company has that sell these shells....
b20bastard: in jdm land im sure they deal with theft too, and what better way than to ship it to another country? in any event, sure, im not saying anyone that swaps has a hot motor, but if you rip off the vin tag on a stolen motor...you can basically pass it off as a "JDM swap"...some food for thought.
thats why in some countries, swapping motors is deemed illegal (time to move! )

here in NY ITR's are like gold. im sure the C5 would pull a premium, stolen or not. there are more hatches rolling around here with swaps than u can count, and Id say more than half are illegal.

In JDM land (japan) there aint much theft (cant say none, but not alot)
hell, i can leave my car out in the open for 3 monhts not one thing gets stolen or scratched.
Thats why i feel safe in japan

I wonder how long before the DC5 Type S's start disappearing to go into the New Si Hatchy. Then it will be a bunch of middle-aged "Survivor" fans that are crying ...

as far as integras, I see them much more stolen in japan since the demand for front ends, and motors are there... does this make any sense?

Re: how many itr swaps do you think is legit out there? (00-0187)
um.... MR2 is pretty big especially after they discontinued it 1999
Integras are also big, but what im tryin to say is that i have friends that have different cars, BMW, Skyline, etc etc etc, and its just a known fact that not alot of cars get stolen in japan. its practically a safe place. I cant say none, cause its gettin worse every year.
EDIT:
oh btw, motorcycle theft is pretty big though.... I guess its how easy it is to steal a motorcycle, but its hard to steal a car since the roads around in japan are very narrow, hard to get a truck in.

ahhh! okay, thanks for clarification...
i was speaking solely of US importing..
but yes, i see...
and motocycles, yeah, i can see how they can be stolen...but whats the point? Can you actually rip apart a motorcycle and reuse the parts?

Re: how many itr swaps do you think is legit out there? (00-0187)
this is all just my thoughts... but
i think motorcycles are easier to register, since you can take apart the parts, put it on a different frame pretty easily, and boom, its a clean motorcycle
also, ive heard on news alot how motorcycles are being shipped out to Thai and other asian places.

Re: how many itr swaps do you think is legit out there? (00-0187)
yeah, thats what i try to do
my friends lock their motorcycles like 3 differnt places just to make sure.
back to the subject,
in the past, there was a itr motor on sale on ebay, and someone bought it, and peopel were saying it was not real, but i backed the dude up and said it was true, cause ive seen a buncha motors go out on that price over here. but then it ended up being a scam... after that, i cant trust motors that are on ebay too much.....
and i also feel sorry for the guy who got ripped off.... its kinda my fault
