Default Cam Gear tuning!!

If I want more top end power, should I advance or retard the exhaust cam gear?
Right now, I have my cam gear setting at +2 intake and -3 exhaust (I am surprise that my idle is still good with this). I can kind of feel like the power die out at around 8000rpm. I have the TODA spec B cams, with ITR IM, Spoon TB, header, and test pipe. Of course a Yoshio tuned ECU.

Also, sometime I can feel hesetation at around 3-5000rpm, but it didn't happen all the time. Would it caused by a bad spark plug or distributor??

Try advancing the intake to 4 and retard exhaust to 1.
Its a good idea to do it on the dyno, to see if you gain any power there.

If you want more top end retard your exhaust cam. Maybe put you intake cam back to O, this will shift the power band up

Just like T said, you have to play with the settings on the dyno to get the best and more accurate results.

question for you guys...anyone know what the size of the bolts(hex design) used to adjust a set of toda camgears?

Also, for a "default" setup, what should I use until I get it on a dyno to improve over 0 but not lose power...any "safe" adjustments? I was told (with my setup) that I should retard exhaust 1 and advance intake 2,3, or 4 from three different people...don't know what to try, and I don't know when I'll be able to get it on a dyno...

for the record, I have an AEM CAI, spoon header, racing medalion exhaust, test pipe...stock internals...

any help is appreciated...

Yes, I would be interested to. I am installing some TODA gears with stock cams and wanted to know what I should set them to.

- Currently in the car Mugen Head Gasket, Mugen Header, Comptech ICEBOX.

Well you can get valve piston contact, esp if you have big cams...

This would be bad.

I believe I'm at +1-1, and it's not bad, maybe I could advance the intake a little.

Maf, I know what you mean about that hesitation from 3-5. I sometimes get the same thing, but other times in the same gear at same throttle at that rpm range it screams? Check ur plugs, are u running rich? I am trying diff plugs (NGK range 6) and I set the gap to 1.2 mm and it feels a little better.

Let me know what you find.

That exactly what happen, but the hesitation problem get worse as the engine heat up!! But sometime there is no problem at all. I was thinking it is the spark plug too, since it got over 50000km on it already.
I will change the plug and see. Hope that will solve the problem!!

Hey,

I did some "tuning" today, and I use that term lightly.

I have NGK coppers ZFR6F11, I will order the BKRE6 soon.

Anyway, I set gap to 1.2 and I may try the stock setting of 1.3 mm.

I noticed that at part throttle, I would get "sputtering" when I let off the gas, like unburnt fuel, so I think it was rich. When I leaned for WOT and part throttle on VAFC, it didn't feel that good, so I richened up WOT, but kept Part throttle lean. This seems to work well so far, sputtering is much better.

Car feels pretty good at WOT too, more consistent. It's weird like before sometimes the car is fast and others it isn't? Now it's more even...

Anyway, maybe read the plugs and try the settings on the VAFC. I may try to advance the intake a little more as well.

Good luck!
