I've been doing some thinking and I've come to the conclusion that I really do not want a roll cage, yet. I still would like to throw in at least 1 racing bucket in the coming months though. I'm most concerned with safety, so I would like to do things the right way.

Here are the questions:

1)Would I be able to safely run a bucket seat using the stock seatbelt?

2)Will the stock seatbelt fit over a bucket seat and still provide the same protection they do when using stock seats. The reason I'm asking is because I dont want the seatbelt hanging 2" in front of me while its being used. I'd rather have it on me.

3)In everyones opinion, is running a bucket seat using the stock seatbelt even worth it in terms of how the stock seatbelt compliments the bucket seat's ability to keep you planted while doing some hard cornering.

I think it's worth it for the side support.

I bought an old civic buckle from http://www.car-part.com (emailed several vendors and used the S&M pic).

Came out to about $25 shipped and it fits perfectly. I just need a seat now lol.

ask aleph how he likes to use the stock belt - safety wise. i'm sure he really only uses the harness though.

If I were you, I would do what I am doing now. I purchased a Auto Power ROLL BAR. At first I bought this because I got in a accident, and I was saved by a guard rail. If the guard rail was not there I would have rolled over off a mountain and died. But it stiffens the chassis and provides great protection, with removable cross bars people can still sit in your back seats, another plus.
No soon I am going to get a bucket seat, not sure witch one, mabey the Mugen. It helps to have a bucket seat after you get some kind of roll over protection, because if the car rolls over then the seat can recline and you won't get crushed.
Finally I would get harnesses. You can get ones that are DOT approved by Scrotch(sp?) {I had a post on these a while back}.

But if your not racing and not going to get harnesses or a roll bar, then get a seat that reclines, like some sparcos or JDM recaros.

Ps I'll like the post of the 4 point DOT seat belts.

Just unbolt the stock belt and thread it through the hole in the seat, like this:

Mount the clip on the siderail, like this:


Now the belt passes right over your lap and in not hung up by the seat. Kind of a PIA to belt up now, but you get used to it.

i track my car maybe 6-7 times a year, at most. hopefully even MORE later. the car will barely be daily driven once i am away. will it be worthwhile to get a roll bar and a seat(over rims[rega evos 15"])?


i think logically, i should be more compelled to buy the roll bar and seat over light weight rims...

Please don't put people in the back, even with the removable cross braces, they will still hit their heads on the roof bars, and still die, in the event of an accident.

Basically, I dont want to have to tear out my whole interior just to install a roll cage. I'm not sure whats involved in installing a roll bar, or whether its installation is similar with that of installing a roll cage.

But, like I said before, safety is number one. I really dont want to run a harness. If I'm just as safe running a bucket seat with stock the seatbelt instead of putting a cage/bar in, then I'm happy.

With a rollbar, you can still run your interior and it is easily removed and installed.

Running just a bucket seat with stock seatbelts is fine for most people because some just want a seat that will hold you in better rather than security reasons.

The link above to S&M is what i did right after I installed my seat, before i got my bar in and harnesses. I only ran it like that for a week, basically to make sure the seat was where i wanted it etc....i removed the seat in the month or so before i had everything ready after the test period. Once i put the rollbar & 5-points (harness without bar = ) i put the seat back in as well. I used the stock belt i rigged up (this time with that civic latch mounted to the center tunnel, as shown here


just in case i needed it. I Never use it. 5 points are what the seat is designed for, and they work best. Sure the stock belts work OK driving around, but that's not really why they're there...in a crash, i think a racing bucket will behave best with a true harness system. You can definatly do it either way, but with camlocks it's not that much more effort to belt in than stock, and you sure get used to the feeling of security
