I did this exact same thing. I found my ITR in Chandler, Arizona. The car had to be smogged in Ca, and registered in Ca before my credit union would finance it. So the guy I bought it from drove out (in exchange for a plane ticket home), stayed at my place, and trusted me enough to register the car in my name first... Then he got his fat check. It is a pain in the *** to buy an out of state car (In Ca anyway), but in this case it was worth it. Just be careful if you do it the way we did, that you get to know the person a little first.

I had the same problem buying from Washington.

I think your best bet is to take a road trip down to the most N. Cal. city with deq and run it through. Once you have the papers it'll probably go pretty quick, but you may also need to do a VIN inspection, so you might check on that.

See if the bank will draw up the papers, contingent on passing deq, etc. Once the papers are ready, you bring the car down, go through deq, sign, and deliver.

Good luck.

i bought my R from a H-t member in Oklahoma , and i had the same ordeal ..its more of a Credit Union/Bank Policy at times ....the owner was actually nice enough to drive out here and get it inspected before closing the loan ...

but be warned ....if the R has mods like intake header ...some places may give you hell about it ...lik ethey did me ...i suggest taking it to some mom and pop shop inspection station ...or a gas station ....as long as they will putt it on the machine it will pass f00 sh00 .....

good luck bro

i live in tulsa, ok and bought my car in topeka, ks. i was really simple. i just went to my credit union, got pre-approved for the loan, got a letter from the bank confirming it. then, went to kansas, wrote a personal check for the amount, showed the owner the letter and had him call my loan officer to confirm and then drove home. the only hang up there is that you have to have pretty good credit for a bank to pre-approve you on a car that they've never seen.
