98 Spec JDM B18C Crower Kit - Cracked JE Piston - Help!
Dear All...
I've been reading this forum for a while now but haven't posted much. I own a RHD 98 SPEC JDM Type R with the B18C engine stroked to 2.0L
Recently I noticed a clinking noise from the engine. After the mechanic tore down the block, we noticed some scoring in the 3rd cylinder (counting from the cam gears). After inspecting the pistons, noticed it is cracked at the area below the piston pin, the "bottom band". The crack caused the piston pin to be loose and thus was scoring the cylinder wall.
Right now my option is to re-sleeve the block (have to re-sleeve as the bore is already 84.5mm), re-bore and replace the damaged piston.
My questions are:
1. How do I tell what JE piston I have? (It is a used car so the pistons came with the car) It is marked 83M and JE on the bottom but that's it. Previous owner said Part#185922 however, I want to confirm this before ordering a replacement
2. What piston rings etc should I buy along with the pistons? Do I have to match the piston rings with the other pistons?
3. What do I need to make sure the machine shop does when they re-sleeve, re-bore my engine? Do I need to re-balance my engine? Or just the pistons? I don't know the machine shop. My mechanic is dealing with them directly.
4. What can I do to prevent this from happening again? I don't particularly drive the car hard. Just on and off revving till redline. Can it be an Engine management issue? Is it a manufacturing defect on the piston?
5. How do I tell if I am having JUN Type 3 Cams? Any markings/tell tale shape of lobe etc?
Thanks lots for any help.
Merry Christmas too
Sean
