Default Would a Main Relay cause my car to die?

I`ve been searching for 2 days and finally may have come to a conclusion. It sounds like my Main Relay is the problem. But I couldnt find wheather or not it would cause my car to die while on interstate. Anybody know? Thanks in advance!

Hmm weird, it caused my car to stop running while on the freeway. Basicly you're saying the only way for a relay to go bad is if the car is turned off first and it cant go bad while the motor is running. That has to be the dumbest thing i've ever heard use common sense before posting false info next time.

There is current passing through the main relay all the time when the vehicle is running. If the relay should go bad while the car is running then the engine would shut off as it controls the fuel pump and injectors.

Turn all devices off in the car (radio, heater controls, etc.) and turn your key to the 'on' position. You should hear the relay click 3 times. (if i remember correctly it is behind the dash). I would have to pull up a electric diagram to find out for sure.

Any ways, if it clicks 3 times the relay is fine and your problem is elsewhere.

I cant hear the relay making any noise what so ever. A Honda machanic told me that if its not the relay my ECU may be fried. But I got a code reader and got the codes off if it. Would I have been able to get the codes off an ECU that was fried?

And when you say "click" 3 times..... is an actual clicking sound? The reason I ask is that when I turn my key it beeps under the dash. I put my ear right next to the Main Relay and I can hear any clicking at all.

You guys are Awesome! Thank you very much for all your help! You have no idea!

it is an actual clicking noise. the ECU causes it to click, IIRC. A lot of the wires for the relay come from the ECU.

You sure it clicks 3 times as normal? I guess I'll have to start my car and listen later.

I'm pretty sure...

I don't have my Teg anymore so I can't go listen to it. But I will listen to the one in my S and Fit and see what they do.

And I still have the Teg electronics manual at home, I'll have to look there as well. I thought it was 3. But my mind may not be what it used to be.

I don't remember beeping...it should be a definite click.

Can you put your hand on it while you turn the ignition on? You will definitely feel the stages of the relay opening.

YES, the main relay can cause your car to die. However it usually prevents the car from starting by not supplying power to the fuel pump. The reason i say this is because my dad has a 97 TL and his car would be running smooth as glass then all of a sudden it would die. $80 and a new main relay later from my local acura dealer and the car has never done this again in over 3 years. My teg's main relay went out a few months ago and it would be a pain to start, i would have to literally tap the main relay, (the grey box above the driver side kick panel with the big plug) for it to click on .

Ok, I didnt feel anything. I tried it 3 times and felt nothing all 3 times.

So a Honda machanic told a friend of mine that if its not the Main Relay then the ECU is probably fried. But would I have been able to get codes off of a fried ECU? Cause I got the codes it was throwing.

Is the ignition coil the same as the coil in the dizzy? If so, I already changed it and that didnt do anything.

Well, I ordered a new one from Honda a few minutes ago. It was $65 for it and to get it overnighted. I got a pretty good discount through my work, about $30 total.

I`ll change that out tomorrow and let you guys know what happens! Thanks again to everybody!

Correct. The ignitor is under the cap and rotor.

I have an EM1 and an AP1. I'll listen for it in the EM1. I would guess it would be the same for a GSR.

test your ignitor, team integra has an article on how to do so. ECU's almost never die.

You had your distributor gone?

I'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean...

Well guys, it wasnt the Main Relay. I got the part this morning and replaced it. It didnt change anything.

The people at Acura were kind enough to take the part back and charge me a 25% restocking fee. Better than not getting any at money back at all.

Im about to take out my ECU and check for anything that looks electicly burnt. This is turning into Hell!

I wanna thank everybody for thier input! Furnther advice would still be great as I dive into the pits of Hell also known as my floor board!
