Check the small things first. Usually if the slave or master is bad then there should be fluid leaking. Check all your hydro lines before taking the tranny off.

slave cylinder is prob the easiest problem to try. its like $10 at advanced auto brand new lifetime warranty.
can you put it into gear with the car off? does it go into gear at all when the car is on? does it grind if it does?

TO all, if it was his slave cylinder, his clutch pedal wouldn't work at all....I think its something else...

try bleeding your system...If you got fluid flowing, then it could be deeper say, a loose shift linkage?

Sounds like a problem in the shift linkage, nothing major. It will take some looking around under the car to see what's wrong. If you disconnect the linkage from the shifter, you can check to see if it goes into all the gears. I can't really illustrate how to do all that, but that sounds like what it is.
