Default why does my motor always smells like gas?

95 gsr

my check engine light has been on for past 2 months after installing my testpipe..one of the o2 sensor wires riped off (dont ask..it just happened). Anyways i picked up a new one saturday and installed it the same day and the check engine light went off. Before when my check engine light was on the car for some reason would eat gas. (Oh yeah forgot to mention, i never punch my car on weekdays..gas in so-cal is nuts..i save my vtec for weekends.). Now that my check engine light is off it stopped eating gas when i drive normal, but everytime i pop my hood my motor smells like gas..obviously it uses gas to run, but it just smells like **** gas to the max. Could gas be leaking from fuel lines? Oh and also i trusted my dad for once w/ my car to take it and get a oil change and his friend happend to put some unknown oil in my car. I changed my oil after driving with that bs oil about 1000 miles to castrol full synthetic 10-40 oil. Everytime i come to check my oil level it always smells like gas. Please tell me if this is normal or retarded?

It shouldn't smell like gas, and the could potentially be a hazard. Gas FUMES are flamable, not the gas itself remember, so if you can smell it, theres fumes, and a fire hazard.

Check your evaporative emissions system (you can find all you need to know on it by searching here/TI). Check your fuel filter and fuel rail for leaks as well.

check your fuel line, fuel rail, and fuel filter...wipe everything down real clean, then turn your car on. check all the above and check for leaks...

Your car was burning fuel bacause of the lack of an o2 sensor, it makes the car run rich when it is not present and/or detected. As for the fuel smell, look at the fuel rail and follow the fuel lines and look for leaks, pop the hood and let the car idle and look under it for any leaks.

I think it might be you were just running so rich becuase of no O2 sensor that you could smell it. Did you say it went away after replacing the sensor?

i think i was running rich..i mean i had a o2 sensor on but it didnt work..one of the wires were riped off and the check engine light was on for the past 2 months. I also check every night under my car or around engine bay if there is some kind of leak but i dont find anything.

Yeah probably because it's operating in the open loop mode without the o2 sensor wires connected. My teg drops by 10mpg with it unplugged. You don't have a high pressure fuel pump installed without a fpr do you?

your valve cover is probably leaking oil. my car use to smell like gas too but i took it to the shop and they said oil was leaking out of my valve cover so i changed the gasket and it stopped smelling.
they said the oil was burning as it was leaking due to the hot engine.
changing doesnt cost much.

ok but my oil lever is always normal unless i pop vtec and top out and i look around my head gasket area and there are no leaks..explain to me more how i can find out another way of my car leaking oil from head gasket without me knowing. And are you talking about the head or valve cover gasket? doesnt a gasket cost like $30 and can be done with basic tools?

the only reason I could see that fuel would be squirting out of the banjo bolt is if you didnt replace the copper o ring between the line and the actual filter. I only know this because it slipped my mind when replacing mine and thats exaclty what happened
