Default Why does my clutch feel so...loose?

Now before you guys start flaming me for not researching, I did-but could not find the same symptoms. A while ago, (in my 1994 GSR) my clutch pedal started losing pressure, and I quickly diagnosed it as a leaky clutch slave cylinder. I replaced it with a new one, properly bled the system, and regained clutch pressure. Despite the new slave cylinder, it seemed like my clutch..or clutch pedal... started to feel "loose"(and this loose feeling happened in a relatively short period of time). The clutch properly allows engagement / disengagement of the gears, but when I shift it feels very jerky and is hard to shift smoothly unless I very gently control the movement of the clutch. Is my clutch just going bad? I bought the car used with 160,000miles and I'm at 188,000 miles now without changing the clutch. Although, I thought the symptoms of a bad clutch is a slipping one. It doesn't feel like it's slipping or losing pressure...it just feels "loose". Perhaps clutch hydraulic? Or is it my clutch/pressure plate? Thanks!!!

Slipping is a sign of a clutch that needs to be replaced if you only drive the car and don't race it at all. After a season at the drag strip, one of my of my springs popped out. It made a slight squeak sound when engaging the clutch while it would just grab and go.

I do autoX my integ once a month and I drive the car pretty hard. My clutch does make a squeak noise sometimes when I depress the clutch. Am I due for a new clutch? or some sort of spring/hydraulic?

Have you checked the fluid? It could be low...

The squeak when you depress the clutch is probably because the grease between the input shaft on the tranny and the throwout bearing has worn away. Most people stick a grease gun in the square hole in the tranny to lube the shaft. Be careful if you do it though. Only use a little and squirt grease towards the tranny side of the throwout fork.

If you're squeaking when you have the pedal pressed, it is also a possibility that your idle bearing is going bad, in which case it is a decent idea to replace the clutch anyway... Mine had been squeaking for awhile and I was having general clutch issues like yours as well, and one day the bearing finally just exploded, taking chunks of clutch disk out with it... I found little shards of the bearing laying in the transmission housing...

For me, my clutch would immediately start engaging, but wouldn't engage any further at all until the very end of clutch travel... So when I shifted, especially when I shifted more quickly, it would be very hard to avoid that "drop the clutch out BANG" So my clutch wasn't slipping... There was some other pressure plate problem, because as soon as I replaced it, it went away.

Yeah my fluid level is perfectly fine. Sounds like maybe I'm due for a new clutch. I'll keep researching.
