When you say he couldn't put it in gear, what do you mean? He couldn't move the gearshift from neutral to any of the gears? That sounds like a transmission/clutch problem, not an engine problem like bent valves.

I'm not a technical expert but I had an engine that jumped the timing, and the engine wouldn't run. You could crank it and it would start but it would run VERY rough and you had to keep your foot on the gas to keep the revs way up; the instant you let off the gas or tried to let out the clutch, it would die.

bent valves/ skipped timing will cause a loss in compression.
it has nothing to do with the transmission

Only other way I've seen it done without taking the head off is using a fiber cam

Had the same thing happened to me recently, it jumped timing after an install, not sure how the hell that happened but it ran very rough and required gas to keep it from dying. Luckily it did not bend any valves.

x2 My integra sounded like a subaru when i had a bent valve. It was cool having all my friends like. "whoa, did you rebuild your teggy with performance parts?" Then i felt stupid and gave them the answer.

Had a bad valve, it was running on 3 cylinders, sounded like a subaru and felt a great loss in power, mostly at low speed and getting off the line
