Re: What Kind of Transmission oil/fluid in manual trans???
I picked up a rebuilt gsr trans with an LSD, I see that there should be difference in what fluid to use when the trans is LSD equipped, I will be tracking the car every now and again, should i run a combination or just straight honda mtf? I have read that the honda mtf won't hold up under track conditions with the lsd, which makes the lsd break. i have no experience with this so any input is welcome

I use honda mtf in my 96 integra ls with 165 kms on the tranny and it works fine but i use the gm syncromesh in my 92 integra ls with 390 kms cause it had a grind in 3rd it helped a little but i would just stick to the honda mtf

use the honda mtf or gm syncro mesh if you feel slight grinding.
but if you only have 10-30 at the moment then use it unitll you can get the right fluid.

Nice information guys, I came to this thread looking for MTF and this is exactly what I was looking for.
Now, you said you've seen good results by mixing synchromesh and Honda MTF, have you seen any bad results?

Re: What Kind of Transmission oil/fluid in manual trans???
Motor oil is designed to reduce friction as much as possible. Syncros on the other hand require friction to slow the gears down for a smooth shift. Honda/Acura MTF is the best choice imo. Mr Honda first learned how to build transmissions for motorcycles long before he was building cars. Most motorcycles use motor oil in their transmissions as the block and trans share the same lubricant. However motorcycles do not have syrncos so they do not require the friction modifiers present in Honda/Acura MTF. I am no mechanic but I believe the heavyweight 75w90 that other auto manufactures require will destroy a Honda transmission. Toyota for instance never made motorcycles. My old Supra used that heavyweight 75w90 stinky crap. My YS1 on my B18C5 has over 222k on it and has seen allot of track time but still shifts perfect at 8700rpm.

Re: What Kind of Transmission oil/fluid in manual trans???
Recently i changed my manual trans. fluid because i just bought my teggy! I used mobil 10w40 motor oil, thats what the dude recommended at advanced auto! Just to be safe i added 12oz. of the lucas oil trans. additive hopefully that helps. I wish i read this thread before making my choices! So far so good, i'll probably change the fluid next month, just to see what happens, or when it starts to grind! Whatcha y'll think about this mixture?

Re: What Kind of Transmission oil/fluid in manual trans???
I used Royal Purple in my old trans that had 180k on it, worked great all the way up to 236k when it took a **** (input shaft/counter shaft and diff bearings finally went out) the thing was stock and beaten up by previous owner. It was not the synchromax. Now with my new Synchrotech built tranny I only use Honda MTF. I buy it by the case and its cheaper than buying it by the qt. I had this tranny and fluid in for about 5k now and its a beast.

i used the same royal purple sycromax and it worked fine. actually was grinding from 3rd to 4th and helped smooth it out a little.

Uncle Scotty's Cocktail for me:
1qt Redline lightweight shockproof
1qt Pennzoil Synchromesh
2qt Castrol Hypoy C 80w-90
bear in mind these are the quantities for a subaru transmission and would have to be adjusted for your capacity

I just got done installing my new clutch kit on my 94 teggy LS and I am unsure of what Trans fluid I should get.
My teggy has about 90,000 miles on it.
The manual recommends using Honda MTF.
There are substitutes like 10W-30 or (10W-40 for longer trips driving)
But I keep hearing of using Pennzoil 10W-30 or others...
I have heard many good things for the following fluids:
-Honda MTF
-Redline
-GM Synchromesh
-Pennzoil 10W-30
What does everyone recommend???
How many quarts?? And how much does it usually run per quart??

Oh good gosh, stop worrying about what kind of mixtures to use and just use straight GM Synchromesh Friction Modified if you can get it, or Honda MTF.
I have been using straight SM FM since about 160K miles, and now have 320K+ miles on my original transmission, and it still shifts flawlessly.

My brothers 5 spd 91 s10 called for ATF, by the above mentioned sources, he put a 80w95 weight gear oil listening to his know it all friend and messed his trans up. He was told by me before this to use ATF, but he'd rather listen to his friend and not a reputable source.

Re: What Kind of Transmission oil/fluid in manual trans???
I'd recently did a flush myself. I started by just using GTX full synthetic 10w30. That lasted for about a week. It was really hard to put it in first gear and reverse.
So used 2 quarts of royal purple syncromax and the rest is Honda MTL. I notice its a world of a difference going from first to second, which is is particularity hard in tegs with over 140 (I'm at 175) on the clock. However as most of the fellow teg S80/Y80 trans owners know, reverse is a hit or miss and can take a few tries to fully go into gear. With the Royal Purple, goes in gear every time with ease. it took about a week for me to get the full effect of the fluid but it was well worth the additional $20 investment.
Another thing to consider when looking at car parts/fluids is select the brand which specializes in a few sale items. A example of this is K&N they really only make air, cabin air and oil filters. The way I see it, if they are around as long as they have, there is a reason, they have quality. Same goes for Royal Purple, theirs a reason why ppl swear by their fluids. Just my 2 cents.
