They are commonly referred to as locks and that's exactly what they do. Lock the retainer to the valve so when you push down on the valve the spring gets compressed. Of course if you push on the retainer the lock will just fall out and your valve will fall into the chamber. That's all you're getting out of me.

You still have to take off the valve seals to remove the valves.
EDIT: I'm wrong, thats to take off the bottom valve retainers (forgot what their called)
