Maybe a rattle, not a grind? Like a heat shield on the exhaust rattling?

^ What he said. It's most likely the heat shield on your exhaust. Take it to a muffler shop and get them to tack weld it back. They will only change you a few bucks.

Thats what I was thinking too.. It sounds like exhaust, but it sounds like its coming from the motor, but I guess there is no way to tell where its coming from unless I look into it.

mine had the same problem in my 95 gsr, and again in my 97 type r...here is 99% sure of wut is the problem: there's a pebble or something stuck between the heatshield and ur exhaust. i took off my heatshield after the cat and there was a small rock in there that rattled and certain vibration levels...in my type r the pebble was between the header and the heatshield

You don't weld the heat shields on, they're attached with bolts. DON'T have anyone weld them on for you haha

what a coincidence i have that same rattle/grind problem, i tought it was my dizzy at first but then my vlaves, checked them both out and they were fine.

never tought it could be something rattling in the exhaust.

but i dont know about the OP but to me the sounds like seems like it comes from the top of my engine but i can't pin point where.

i just took off my exhaust mani cover off, no pebles and the noise was still there.

so there is another heat shield under the engine right?

There's the heat shield on the cat which is a common rattle and also possibly maybe the exhaust touching one of the heat shields that are attached to the car and insulate the floor from the exhaust. The stuff inside a cat will also rattle if it comes loose and starts crumbling, and the exhaust/cat/header can rattle against each other if a connection is loose (mine does that at the cat/exhaust because one of the studs snapped off the cat when I was trying to unbolt it from the exhaust).

hate to keep thread jacking here.

but i checked my heat shields and in closer inspection i found that a stud had broken off inside the exhaust manifold. the stud was for a bracket that bolts to the block. the bracket was just loose so i removed. i tought that was the problem but no dice.

still rattling...

The stock A-pipe can separate internally and cause a nasty rattle through certain rpms. Have a muffler shop put it up on the rack while you rev the engine a bit, they should be able to pinpoint your rattle.

i just hope its nothing internal

i dont think its nothing major otherwise i think i would hear it at higher rpm's

plus it goes away once it warms up a bit.

im just going to sit here and believe is something rattling in the exhaust.

My DA does the EXACT same thing at 3K. It almost for sure sounds like the engine but i dont know. Funny thing is, i was riding in my friends LS/VTEC CRX a few weeks ago and he mentioned that his car did the same thing. So i listened and his motor made the same sound at 3K. Im beginning to think its just a Honda thing. Just my .02

i have the same stupid *** noise coming out of my 95 gsr. I bought the car a couple weeks ago and it was silent as the night and no its annoying. And its only at 2500 to 3000 rpm. I want a whole new exhaust system for it so im not worried. At first i thought it something in the engine but now im sure its some stupid heat shield.

An exhaust tip can't make an exhaust sound raspy. You mean raspy as in buzzy, or what? I'm guessing your car is turbocharged, right, since you say 3" downpipe? If you got rid of that cherry bomb and got a nice resonator and muffler it'd take away any buzziness especially if your car is turbocharged since the turbo helps quiet it down a lot.

I had this same problem in my 97 RS 3K-3.5K it would rattle. Last week I changed my cold air intake filter and now there is no noise at all . I have no idea if it had anything to do with the rattle, but now I have a CEL
