Default Warped Rotors

What are some tell tale signs of a warped rotor when i hit the brakes at speeds above 60mph the steering wheel shakes kinda badly. so i think i might have warped rotor/s but i dont c how i can have any of my rotors warped since i bought my car i have not subjected it to any kinds of heavy braking conidtions or instances where i had to repeatadly hit the brakes and ride them. what do warped rotors look like i have looked at all 4 corners and they look normal to me
I have brembo cross drilled up front and stock in the rear.

that is defiantely the symptom.

There are other things than just Heavy braking that can contribute to warpage; general wear, hot rotors splashed with water, I heard that riding the brake while going over speed bumps contributes to warpage as well.

Heat them up real well and then go to the car wash and spray them down with cold water or dash through a deep puddle. That'll do it.

Sounds to me like it's time to buy new rotors.

The only way to really figure out if the rotors are warped is to drive it and if it chatters when you hit the brakes at any speed the you need rotors. Brakes can chatter also if you have a bad tie rod end, lower or upper ball-joint, or bad caliper or brake hardware. The brake lines can make the brakes malfunction also when foreign material is in the lines and will only let fluid go one way.

They would have to be warped beyond use before you could tell with the naked eye. Take them off take them to a machine shop. Have them resurfaced, they will tell you if they are warped or not. Slap some new pads on it and your problems will PROBABLY go away.

when my rotors were bad the car started to chake when braking at high speeds
and as it got worst the car started to shake when braking at lower speeds
when i changed to new rotors it fixed that problem
and you can tell that its worped just buy feeling it
if its not worped to should feel completly smooth like a mirror
if its worped you will feel lil lines and it wont be perfectly smooth

when I bought my used truck, the rotors were warped very badly. I hardly could drive it, it was so bad, but I loosened and torqued all the lugs down to spec and it was a lot less noticable.

Those are groves not the warping, looks and feels like an old record. It's a symptom.

Applying the proper torque to all four wheel nuts will help keep rotors from warping. If one or two wheel nuts are tighter than the others on the same wheel, the rotor is voulnerable to warping.

Cheap pads are what contribute to most symptons of warping, Riding your brakes over speed bumps are not going to mahically warp your rotors. Whith Cheaper or Oem organic pads you get material transfer that cause's high and low spots on the surface of the rotor. Get new rotors and some better quailty pads and treat your brakes right after heating them up and your warping problems will go away. Since I started using better quality pads (http://www.carbotecheng.com, Talk to Matt or, http://www.cobaltfriction.com talk to andie) I have not had any "warping" problems with my brakes which includes at least 8 weekends at the track where I spend at least 4 30 minute session decelrateing from 100+ to 40 or 50 mph several times, when I come in the pits I drive around to let the brakes cool, and set the emergencey brake, and I have had no probles warping rotors.

just curious but what does lug torque have to do with rotor warping?

Incorrect torque can warp the Hat of the rotor and make it sit unevely on the spindal, which could defintaly make your wheels shake under braking and probably regular driving also.

oh.. read this..

bottom line, ur rotors are warped.. my uncle works with that ish all the time, day and night, he's worked on mine.. there warped.
like 10 people on here have said, heat and over tqing the bolts/nuts will also contribute to warpage..

solution:
well simple.. either go buy some new rotors, new or used from a junkyard or a friend, or... u can just take them to a break shop and they can shave off and level the rotors (thats what me and my uncle did)
now a note about the shaving process, they know what there doing so its fine, but because u have a new "slick" surface on them, ur breaks are not going to contact/stop you as well as they did be4.
just dont worry about it, but make sure u stop a little be4 u regulary do because its not goin to be an instant stop, ur goin to "slide/slip" a little more then usual, but this runs out after a day or so.. maybe less depending on how much u drive
