Default Uh oh...

Driving my car today with a friend and it was making all kinds of knocking noise. I just got my turbo tuned a few days ago and ive drove it pretty hard a few times. Well we couldnt figure out was was making the noise. Thought that it was the finder hanging down or a broken boot.

Turned out that 3 out of 4 of my lug nuts were loose I could of taken them off with my hand.

This is just a reminder to check you luggss.

Lucky you.

Man, I hear this knocking noise on the front left side of the car... sounds like its coming from the wheels. It only makes the noise when I press the brakes. It's a 99 GSR with steelies on it and DUMPED. I just bought the car so I'm not really familiar with what it could be. Any ideas?

Could be a loose finder or weak motor mount or something. I don't know, its hard to say without hearing the noise.

I'm curious though, how expensive are they to change out?

Do you generally change them all at the same time?

I was searching Ebay, and found all 5 GSR mounts for 199 shipped

What is a finder???? Ohhh you mean fender......

The lower motor mounts are actaully pretty easy to change. The upper rear is the real pain. If you mounts are not rippes them you could get a prothane or energy suspension morot mount kits.

As far as your knocking, I am will to be it is your axles. It is pretty common when you car is slammed. It just puts a lot of extra stress on the axle. Truck guys have the same issue when they are rasied too much.

Hmm. I need to raise the car up anyhow so I can get on the rollers to do emissions because they said I was too low. So I guess I'll find out then.

It's weird though because it only happens when I brake, and ONLY when I brake.

I was thinking the same.

I'll probably just go aftermarket.

Damn... that's most likely your brake calipers and rotors. After awhile when the calipers wear out they pulsate when you stop, which causes warped rotors. That's where your getting that knocking noise when stopping. Does the steering wheel shake really bad when you stop too?
My old Eclipse did that so bad lol I mean it wouldn't stop after a bit on the brakes lol.
Bottom line, get them checked. If I am right, you need the calipers, rotors and pads. If you can put them on yourself, it shouldn't be too hard.

The steering wheel doesn't shake at all. When it first started happening that is what I thought as well, but now that somebody mentioned motor mounts, I think thats where the problem lies. We shall see.

Thanks for the response.

Interesting you mention this... If I start the car for the first time in the morning, it shakes a bit and the RPM's fall, but it only happens once. Because if I shut the car down, and start it back up, it stays at a steady 1k Idle.

Surprisingly, OEM is more expensive than aftermarket, hence why I'm going to aftermarket.

I was having a similar problem with a noise like that when applying the brakes. Took them off to change and found they were warped and almost no meat left on them at all.
