the engine is a b18a1 it has all 10 mm bolts which is what my buddy told me, im not taking it apart till i know the specs. What if i just used a torque wrench to find out? would it work that way? like start out small and work my way up little by little until they move a tiny bit then go down one and that should be the torque right?

Don't do that.
20 ft/lbs for the 12mm & 7.8 ft/lbs for the 10mm sounds about right though. It's not much, and they wont seem "super" tight, but you don't want to over do it.
