Hey, it's about that time for me to change the timing belt on my Integra. Any suggestions on brand names? It's a daily driven B18B1, no mods like cams, cam gears, etc. just a bone stock engine.

Might as well just go oem. Or the regular black gates belt should hold up fine also.

i went with the gates kit:

1995 ACURA INTEGRA Engine Parts

you could go with the gates blue belt if you want to splurge:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/94-01-ACURA-INTEGRA-RS-LS-B18B1-ENGINE-GATES-BLUE-RACING-TIMING-BELT-T184RB-/360395793220?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AIntegra&hash=item53e9436344&vxp=mtr
the gmb kit is a popular choice for the cheapskates:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-01-Honda-CR-V-Acura-Integra-B18B1-B20B4-B20Z2-Timing-Belt-Kit-GMB-Water-Pump-/220762385514?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AIntegra&hash=item336676ac6a&vxp=mtr
looks like going with honda parts would cost about $230 on ebay lol.
says here gates makes the honda belt so i'd stick with gates:

Yeah, I've heard a lot of good things about Gates so I'm gonna go with that. I'm not sure if I wanna invest in the blue belt though. It's my daily driver, and I even have the OEM case over the timing belt, and an uncut valve cover. So it doesn't get much exposure to the engine bay elements.

Dont forget new timing belt cover bolts. They are always rusted seized on older cars.

And by timing belt bolts I'm assuming you mean cam gear bolts, tensioner bolt and crankshaft bolt?

Oh derp, I read that too fast and didn't even realize he "cover".

Mine aren't rusted either. The car is a '97 so it's not too bad.

The gates aftermarket kit is decent. It's not the same quality as a Honda kit...but its a good kit overall. I think they're like $100 at rockauto.com. Buy the one with the water pump and tensioner.

I would take care of the thermostat (always buy genuine Honda) as well. Might as well spend the extra $20 while the coolant is already being drained out.

Cool, I'll definitely check it out. I don't think I'll be replacing the thermostat though. Those things are a bitch to do, and I haven't had any issues with overheating since I've had the car. OEM thermostat is still kicking

A thermostat is 2 bolts worth of work. It's extremely easy. Did someone tell you it was difficult?

Genuine Honda thermostats are fail safe. So they fail open...not closed. It won't over heat. It'll just stop wanting to warm up one day. It'll be a day filled with sadness.

I always change em during a t belt job.

but the ones from autozone were not fail safe, ask me how i know. the worst part about t stat change is draining the coolant. and the gates kit is fine, i have it on my stock b20 daily driver put about 15k miles since last year with no issues.

the gates blue belt is fantastic, its on my 500hp civic and doesnt stretch like oem belts do, but its probably overkill for you.

if i had to guess the biggest hassle for this is getting the crank pulley bolt loose. i recommend getting the special tool that fits in the hex part of the pulley, a good 1/2" drive ratchet and a long pipe like 3-4 ft to slide over the end of the ratchet for more torque. good luck, overall its not a bad job

The coolant will already be drained for the water pump.

If you remove the block drain plug, you can drain everything out before you get to the water pump or thermostat.

I agree that the crank pulley is the part that most people have trouble with. A good impact goes a long way. Or just take it to a shop and have them loosen it/retighten it for you before you start the work.

I know it's only two bolts, but getting to it is a bitch. I did it on my old car and it's just at an awkward spot to get to even after you removed your intake and everything. I'll definitely get a Gates timing belt tho. I've only heard good things. I'm just gonna go with the regular one tho, as its just my daily driver lol not track use.

Thermo is very easy to replace i can get to mine without moving anything. Id do it just because your draining the coolant its very cheap and easy to replace, better to do it while the timing belt is replaced then to one day have to drain it just to replace the bad thermo.

There's no way you can get to it without at least moving your intake! Haha if so you must have small hands or something. But I see your point. I need some time and money to get this done. I only have another 500 miles before I need an oil change, too.

If moving your intake seems like a mission to complete, a timing belt change is going to be a journey. Like wunfstgsr said, coolant is already drained, might as well replace it especially if you dont know the last time it was.

Preventative maintenance goes a long way. There's no telling when a t-stat is about to go out. When it does, you might not have the time to drain the coolant and replace it, so you try to squeeze by driving with your heater on and refilling your reservoir for a couple days. When you finally get to it... you'll be lucky if only the t-stat was affected.

Lol I'm not saying its difficult to remove the intake, I'm just saying getting to the 2 bolts for the thermostat housing is annoying. Ive replaced it on my old Integra before so I know how simple it is. I've done the journey of replacing a clutch before so this is nothing. There's no need to be harsh, we're all on the same team here

My response was in no way intended to be harsh or offensive. It's just the way I interpreted your statements, I suppose.

There's a lot of bolts on a b series engine that aren't in the most convenient locations. The less you think about it, the easier the task will become.

Yeah I agree. But you do have to admit, b-series engines are pretty damn convenient in the automotive world. Even in comparison to other series in its generation (F-series, H-series, etc.)

Assuming its an OEM thermostat.....

And even then, regardless of the OEM thermostat's design, it can still fail to open up.
