Default TDC... Which Cylinder is which?

Need some help... Im a little confused..

Firing Order 1-3-4-2

I know when the Up Mark on cam gear are pointing up number 1cylinder is TDC.
Up marks to the right number 2 cylinder TDC.
Up marks to the left number 3 cylinder TDC.
Up mark pointing down number 4 is TDC.

Ok so when your in front of car looking at motor which cylinders are which?
How does it go looking at them?

1-3-4-2?
4-3-2-1?
2-4-3-1?
1-2-3-4?

Thanks.

when it is tdc for 1 it is also tdc for number 4...vice versa with 2 and 3...Only when ignition timing is a factor is when the above cant be used because its only firing on one piston at a time but both are at TDC (intake stroke and exhaust stroke)

helpful tip if youre doing a valve adjustment or something to save time (ive seen tards go all the way 180 and be like thats TDC for number 4 and not realize nothing has changed in the valve train department)

TDC by definition refers to top of piston travel on the compression stroke, which is when all valves are closed. When 1 is at TDC, 4 is also at the top of its travel, but the exhaust valves are closing and the intake valves are opening, and actually there is a bit of overlap where both intake and exhaust valves are open slightly at the same time. If 1 is at TDC and you're adjusting valve lash, you cannot adjust valve lash on #4.

Now when doing a valve adjustment, all valves must be closed, which simply means the cam lobes are not touching the rocker arms. You don't have to be EXACTLY at TDC when doing a valve adjustment, just look at the cam lobes and make sure that all 4 of them are pointing up and away from the rocker arms on whatever cylinder you're adjusting.

remove your valve cover...look again...its not opening the valves on 1 or 4...ive done my valve lash like this for a while and it works out just fine
