Default Starter?

I have a 94 intega ls, manual trans. My starter has been acting up a bit lately. When i turn the key it click and nothing happens. This only happens once win a while, when i try again the car will start.

Well today im going to work and i try to start the car and it clicks and the starts right up. The engine sounded kind of funny like the starter kept cranking so i tried to shut my car off to try and start it up again. Well the car keeps on going. I took my key out and the starter keeps on spinning. I put my key back in the ignition and turned the car on without having to press in clutch. I finaly took of my battery and the damn thing shut off.

Is my starter messed up or could it be something much more complicated. I didnt try to start it up since, and prolly wont until i replace my starter. Im just worried it could be somethign else.

sounds like a starter up until you say it keeps running and wont shut off. starters will stick sometimes. the bendix gets stuck and doesnt come out to grab that flywheel. like you said, jus keep clicking it and it will go. sometimes u have to tap on them witha hammer or something. but...if the starter keeps spinning...somehow its getting 12v when it shouldnt. sounds more complicated than jus t a starter, but yes youll need a starter soon! good luck!

agree, check the wiring that is going to the starter. There is 1 ground and one little attachment which is for the 12v. check them both and see if its that. It could be your starter. I have one for an obd1 ls 95 i could sell for 25 bucks.

I had a similar problem with my integra. My car would just not start sometimes, at all. Other times it would. I couldn't find a pattern, it just started when it wanted to. I could turn the key to the on position and jump the connections on the starter and it would start. After MANY times of popping the hood, finally the cable broke to pop the hood, I bought a started switch from AutoZone and ran a fused wire to both and into my car. Now when the key won't start it, I just turn it to on and push the button. You can test the voltage on the big wire, but first detach the smaller spade connected one. The starter will not roll over if one of the wires is detached. Be careful, the big wire has constant 12V when the battery is hooked up and makes nice sparks fly if you ground it... OUCH! I think it's probably your starter sylenoid since you had the same problems as me at first.

Gonna go with the starter as well sounds like the silinoid is staying engaged so your starter stays engaged. Also the clicking and not starting is signs of a possible starter going bad.

ok...Go to nappa or somewhere similar i just like nappa. Buy a connector piece that looks like the end of big starter wire. What i did was similar to what 9lsvtec6 did. I ran a wire to a button and started it this way. If it starts up fine this way it is not the starter, it would be something electrical..correct? So jimmy rig something up so the starter can get 12v and see how many times it will start up this way out of like 5 times. If it starts up all 5 times. most likely not start. I will do a picture by picture of what u should do if its not the starter when i get time. I work tomorrow (monday) but have tuesday off so probably then. Let us know the update.

Default HELP Please.

BUMP. I am having this EXACT same problem!!!

Starter engaged (stuck) and still getting power when key is removed... spinning like mad even when car is started. Probably will need a new starter as it was smoking. Short circuit?

Does anyone have a solution to this problem or have any ideas? My car is currently at a shop undergoing diagnostics, and I figured if I could clue them in on what it might be it would save some time and money. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I talked to the technician and he says the fuse box under the hood had a short circuit or was fried somehow and needs to be replaced. The starter motor is also burned out as expected... hopefully that is all that needs replacing.
