signs of a bad fuel pump?
I think I have narrowed down my wigged out car to a bad fuel pump. But before I post the symptoms I would like to know what symptoms other people had when their fuel pump kicked the bucket (died)
thanks

Re: signs of a bad fuel pump? (Bob-DC2)
Well I think my fuel pump is going bad. I gonna replace it tommorow with a BBK one I got from Summit. Ever since I did the B20 swap, the a/f ratio has been real lean, as in it almost always sits on lean while I'm driving (an autometer guage). And nothing changed when I went from 45 psi to 55 psi on the fuel pressure. Now heres my theory, when I adjust the fuel pressure, its at idle, and there is very little fuel being used, so the injectors aren't open much. However as you start driving the injectors start to open more and the ecu try's to increase the fuel pressure, through increased voltage to the pump, so basically your trying to keep the fuel pressure up even though theres holes in the line (the injectors). So I think the pump can maintain the base fuel pressure, but once it starts getting taxed it falls on its face. I thought maybe it was the injectors, but all the spark plugs look the same (white as hell), and stock 240cc injectors have been used on much higher horspower engine than my lowly b20b non vtec with just 12:1 pistons. I wish I had a fuel pressure guage in the cabin, as this would definently help validate my theory, but I already have the fuel pump and the current one has 143K+ miles on it, so it can't hurt.
Anyways hopefully I'll be able to let you know how it turns out. Oh ya right now I can only go up to 17% (usually drive around 12%-13%) throttle while driving without hearing (what I think is) detontation....thank god this motors got some extra torque, I don't think 17% throttle in 5th gear on my B18B would have gotten me much anywhere.

Also I think when I first did the swap I could take it to like 30 or 40% throttle before hearing stuff, but now its down to 17%
S-AFC measurments for throttle.

Re: signs of a bad fuel pump? (MachAF)
Well once before when it was really hot out, my car wouldn't start up. I immediately thought it was the relay but it wasn't (tested fine). Car started back up and all was good. Today it was pretty damn hot outside, bout to leave a friends house and lose all fuel pressure and "audible" sound from fuel pump. I once again think its the relay, replace with a newer one from a friend and no go. Car started up a few times but under load at all lost power and pressure. Now there is no "whine" at the pump, tomorrow morning I will be checking the pump and circuits with DMM. I'm pretty sure I gotta dead pump.
