Default running engine w/o radiator cap after filling coolant

Okay I know after draining and refilling the coolant you're supposed to run the engine w/o the radiator cap until the fan comes on and the coolant starts circulating throughout the block, then add coolant as necessary. Well when I flushed my coolant and ran the engine w/o the rad. cap, I noticed the coolant rising (before the fans came on) so it kept overflowing over the radiator opening, and I had to keep soaking it up w/ paper towels. I thought that's what the overflow tank was for. Why did my coolant keep overflowing the radiator neck instead of going into the tank? I know the tube between the radiator and overflow tank is not clogged because I checked it and washed it out. Any ideas what I should do? How come I can't just let the engine run w/ the radiator cap on?

isn't that normal since theres no radiator cap to keep the coolant level/pressure down? I think if the cap was there.. if it needed to it would go into the overflow tank... also your procedure is what I do when I flush and refill coolant... I also have the HVAC at max hot and the blower on full heat...

it does overflow some as the car is running w/o the cap... sometimes when it works out some air or something.. the level dips down quite a bit.. at least on my car it did...

it did the same thing to mine. But i think that the cap has to be on since it will build up pressure to send it to the overflow tank. Im not 100% sure so if im wrong someone please correct me. But i guess you would just have to let it overflow a little and wait till the fans cut on and the coolant starts to circulate...Good luck...

When I filled my radiator, I ran the car with the cap on. First I filled the radiator, bleed it and also filled the coolant resevior tank and then ran the car for a bit. After the thermostat opened,up it sucked up all the coolant our of the resevoir bottle so I just refilled it and was good to go.

Edit spelling

the hose going to the reservior needs to be lower than the fluid level at the radiator cap. It doesnt matter when the cap is on cuz pressure lets it flow. hth

okay well helms and haynes both specify running the car w/o the radiator cap after filling the system. Is this absolutely necessary? Would it be alright to run with the radiator cap on?

did u drain just the radiator.......or did you flush the engine as well? With the filler bottle the g3 tegs should hold about 8.5 quarts of coolant/water. I recently had to swap out my radiator cuz it was cracked... when i refilled the new rad, I turned the car on and filled the radiator with about 70/30 coolant to water just to prevent anything from freezing and then the reservoir tank 50/50. Initially when I was filling the rad, it began to bubble alot causing some spillage and as the bubbles started to settle, I placed the cap back on. You may need to fill a few times so that the pressure compresses the excess air pockets
