Remote start preventing car from starting
Hey guys, I got a remote start clifford 5.5 alarm system installed about 6 years ago and the past week its been acting strange. When I try to start the vehicle with key in ignition, it cranks up but as soon as I release the key it dies. Now when I remote start the car and put the key into the ingition , it starts up fine but as soon as I hit the brakes it kills the engine. It's like the fail-safe is automatically engaging and not allowing me to start the car.
I am in the process of getting a new Viper alarm system installed and it is still doing the same problem, I figure it was the brain on the Clifford that was going bad. The alarm place called me today to update me on the progress and they said they are still checking it out but they may think it is the ingition on the car that is causing this. I called autozone and they said a new ignition module is about 50 bucks and from the symptom I described, that could be the problem.
Any ideas?? I'm running out of options here.
Vehicle is a 1996 GSR.
Thanks guys!

Re: Remote start preventing car from starting
It could be the ignition switch. The remote start module bypasses the switch and runs the car with the module. Once you put the key in, the module cuts out and goes back to the switch. If you're still having problems with the new alarm, I'd start there. You can test the switch to see if you're getting continuity between the white wire and the black/yellow wire with the key in and in on position. Unplug the switch, of course.

Re: Remote start preventing car from starting
Thanks for the info man, my installer is going to bypass the switch for now so I can remote start the new alarm and drive normal until I install the ignition switch. The part has been ordered and should arrive tomorrow, I will keep you posted.

Re: Remote start preventing car from starting
Did "your" installer test the ign. switch to see if it was the problem, or is he one of those installers that use Ttap type connectors to install remote starts.
It is a common problem the we fix at our shop all the time, when a Ttap type connector is used it can sheer through not only the insulation of the wire being connected to, [ign. lead in your case] but also the wire strands inside, and as in most cases, it does not cut all the wire strands when installed, the last few will go at some point down the road.
The result is either no start/run with either the key or the remote start or more commonly no start/run with key but it will start/run with the remote start.
If you have not already, test the output of the ign. switch ign. lead, [black/yellow].
With that said, problems with Honda/Acura ign. switches is not uncommon...
