Problem after Clutch/flywheel install

Problem after Clutch/flywheel install
I did a clutch and flywheel install on my 99Ls with a 99 B16 tranny, i installed a competition stage 4 clutch, and a excedy flywheel. I followed the write up on team integras website and torqueed everthing to spec. While driving everything feels great engagment is really good no problems at all. The problem is when i go to start the car, when i turn the key(the car is off right now) it makes like this grinding sound like when your car is already on the motor running or idleing and you turn the key again like if you where trying to turn the car on again. that sound except the car is off. it does this a couple times before it will start. i tried starting in neutral and in all gears it will still make that sound. the starter is only a couple months old so i have no idea what the proplem is can anybody help me out here plz
Thanks guys

Re: Problem after Clutch/flywheel install
The sound you are hearing is the starter not engaging properly with the ring gear on your flywheel. Id say something is wrong with either the flywheel or the starter.

I'd check to see that the starter bolts are fully torqued down, just to make sure that its not loose and causing bad engagement of the starter on the flywheel.

On the flywheel the flat side is suppose to be facing the pessure plate right? The starter is on tight and torqued to spec so what else can it be? Other than of course the flywheel maybe on backward which I doubt

Yeah the clutch disengages just fine. Except just last night I noticed this grinding when putting it into 3rd gear at higher rpms, but that might be a whole different problem on it's own.
So for now I should just be checking the starter right? Since the flywheel is spanking new I doubt there would be anything wrong with it.

Re: Problem after Clutch/flywheel install
Never heard of this before, with any flywheel. I've been running a Clutchmasters 8 lb. aluminum flywheel since 2003 with no issues whatsoever. The car is on its 3rd clutch and the flywheel is on its 2nd friction surface, and never had an issue with the starter gear engagement.

Hmm, sounds like you might be a few teeth off from either the starter or flywheel.
One other thing, did you face match your flywheel to remove any stacked tolerances. You do this with a dial indicator to lower or reduce engine vibration. Might be a good thing to do if you are going to be reworking on the flywheel and clutch.

It comes from someone running a search for something, finding this thread and reading it, then putting in their 2 cents without looking at the date of the last post.
