Plans for build
Hey guys,
I was looking to get some ideas for a build for my 01 GS-R. It is my DD and occasional play toy i.e. autox and casual racing with friends.
From what I have read so far about the dual stage intake manifold, I like that it provides low end power to complement where VTEC provides high end. So my goal is to improve on that full powerband. I've had other friends recommend a full exhaust or a bigger throttle body. Looking for any other thoughts on what would also help?
Also I would like to tune it through Hondata but I won't be able to go the p28 route and keep my dual stage mani. The only other option i have seen is the p72 ecu. Is this a viable option? will it still work well with my goals or is there a better alternative?
I've done some research into my ideas but obviously I didnt find everything so any help is appreciated. And if my current ideas are not feasible or are incorrect let me know.

Re: Plans for build
ditch that manifold it's one of the worst for top end, do what everyone does and get a skunk2 manifold/70mm tb and some generic intake. you're limited to what you can and cant do going by the location of Cali you're pretty much screwed other than bolt on's.
sucks to live in CA from what I see you have very limited choice to stay carb compliant. get an exhaust if you want but you'll barley net anything power wise it's a stock N/A b series. only real way you can get anything out of a b is from FI and that's not really an option if your in cali.

Re: Plans for build
I get what your saying b swapped but I don't want my car to be all top end. I like the idea of the full powerband. Makes for a nice daily.
What's so bad about the stock im anyways?
And yes I live in Louisiana lol. No sweat though I'm sure it's an easy confusion for a non American

if you look at a cutaway diagram it has 8 runners small ones at that due to the whole IAB thing, it's fine for low/mid but horrid for up top aka 7K up. Had a gsr 2 years ago with that intake then switched to the skunk2, the low end is still fine but top end greatly increased you'd need a chipped ecu at the least due to the fact its an aftermarket intake. the trans playa bigger role in usable low power for a DD so long as you have an ITR or gsr you'll be fine. Everyone likes to knock it saying you lose notable low end yet fail to have any details of their claims. bolt ones is your best bet every thread like this begins/ends with those suggestions nothing wrong with it.

p72 as an option? i thought all GSRs were managed through P72 ecus?
as far as keeping the powerband "thick" the factory did a good job already. back in the 90s dan paramore (DPR) did a lot of porting of factory intake and exhaust manifolds that added like 2-3hp max to the midrange. I dont know what he charged but im sure it was a lot of money for the gains you would get. worth it if you wanted to keep the car stock and just wanted to improve power from a stock OEM perspective. to some people its worth that.
everything on the market (the reason you made this thread) is made to make power up top. short of forced induction or bigger displacement, theres not too much out there.
I would love a 250whp NA honda 4 cylinder that is whisper quiet, and doesnt sound like a pissed off bumble flying around in a tin can. if there are factory cars out there pushing 400-500hp and can still be quiet, I want it done on a honda, even if it sucks up 100whp. and I want it with AC and PS and even cruise control. has anyone done that yet? please show me!

Get smog, then you have two years unmolested to boost/tune/whatever
Then you could go back to stock for smog check, or pay to have passed. Either way bitch state yes but huge tuner scene nonetheless
