My car has 47,XXX and my valve was totally clogged.
My car had only ~40k miles when I checked my PCV valve, and it was completely non-functional! It produced not a single rattle.

Not to mention that when I got a new valve installed it made a very noticeable noise when I started the car.

I sure wish I could get my hand down around where the valve is to make sure it's fully seated. When I changed mine I had a hell of a time, and I don't think I got it seated all the way in the top of the separator.

Since I have a GSR how would I get to it? Ok put it this way. How would a mechanic get to the valve correctly?

I would suggest taking a long screwdriver and push down on the sides of the PCV valve. This should allow you to make sure that the PCV valve is fully seated.

When I installed my oil catch can, I finally had to remove the throttle body to gain access to the PCV valve. I actually worked out nice, because I was then able to spray some throttle body cleaner on the backside of the throttle body plate and inside of the intake manifold to try to clean up some of the oily "gunk" which had accumulated.

Ok someone answer this for me. Does the valve just pull out? Or do I have to unscrew it? Any tips would be appreciated. I think I'm just going to replace it since its only $3 or so. Not worth chancing a future clog even if its still good.

So what your saying is I have to remove the TB to access it correctly? Thats alot of work. I will take a look myself and see if I can access it.

The valve pulls out on the big end, and the small end is held on by a clamp. I did not have to remove the throttlebody but I did pull the strut tower brace.

It is a real reach becuase of that clamp, budget a good hour for the first time you do it, and DO NOT attemtp to change the valve when the engine is hot.

Pretty much any auto parts store should have one for you.

BSQ I think you need to put that diagram from TOO on your site. I like when I installed my sway bar there were lots of pictures, but for the catch can install, there are NO pictures of the install, just the final picture.

I tried that. It doesn't look like the valve is seated all the way, but I couldn't push down on it any more w/ a screwdriver. I was afraid of breaking the valve if I pushed too hard. Any ideas if I could reach the valve from underneath and push it in place, like when I'm changing my oil or something?

since its kind of far down maybe you can reach for it from underneath the car.

I agree. I will be reworking my oil catch can installation instructions in the very near future. I will include more pictures and a diagram similiar to one on T.O.O.'s site. I will also include the 2 diagrams from the Helms service manual.

BTW, I just completed reworking (still need to finish tweaking it) my DIY "Icebox" CAI. If you get a chance, check it out and let me know what you think... http://www.geocities.com/bretq/DIY_Icebox_CAI.html .

you asked when it is ready for replacement...well in my case on my 95 LS with 100k, my oil light came on and I was about bone dry...it was the pcv valve leaking.

I wasn't aware you could leak oil out of the PCV valve enough to cause the crankcase oil level to drop very much.

Ok I just replaced my PCV valve on my 98 GSR. Was actually easy. guess my hands are not that big. Well anways it only took me like 10 minutes to do this. Most of the time was wisted on trying to figure out how to get the hose off the valve. Very easy fix for only $3. with only 32k on my car the stock PCV valve was clogged to the point of nothing moving inside it. All you really need is a long pair of angled needle nose pliers and small flat head screw driver. I had to use the pliers to unhook the clamp which held the valve to the hose. The flat head screw driver was carefully used to help pry the valve from the hose.

Overall I would have to say this is easier then changing an oil filter.
