oil light on
I was Driving my 95 teg on the highway yesterday and all of a sudden my oil light starts to flash! So I pull over check the oil and its full. The light does not come on till operating temperature and at idle it stays on but above idle the oil light will flash. What is wrong with my car it does not even have 80,000 miles on it yet

Re: oil light on (DOHCgarage919)
I would check in this order
1 Lack of oil
2 Bad connection to sensor
3 Bad oil pressure sensor
4 Blocked Oil Filter
5 Bad oil pump (is there oil pressure?)
Does it flash randomly, or steadily?

Oil readings should be similar when the car is cold and when it is hot. The oil expands when the engine is hot, but it's also present throughout the engine, whereas when the engine is cold, it has a chance to drain and settle in the oil pan. These two effects offset each other, and the difference between the two readings isn't huge. Try it and see for yourself.
The owner's manual tells you to check the oil level when the car was running and has been shut off for a few minutes. (Like when you stop to fill up with gas.)

I did check the oil when it was cold also! It is so weird it should not be the oil pump the motor does not even have 80,000 miles on it. has this happen before to any 1?

Dont jump to conclusions. Check all these first...as listed.

It flash steadily when the car is in operating temps and is above idle at idle it is on all the time. The only thing I can thank of doing is to hook up a oil pressure gauge and see what it reads and that will hopefully tell me what i need to know bad oil pump or bad sensor

Without being there to troubleshoot, i would say change the oil and filter now and see if that helps. Then start looking at your wiring and ECU, because it shouldn't flash steadily.
The oil light blinking like it's your blinker is not normal. If it's just kind of flashing like a loose connection, check your wiring.

Re: oil light on (thewrai6th)
I have the same problem, for me its the oil pressure switch. I have a 91 integra so i dont know if its in the same location but on my car if you look at the back of the engine its i believe below the alternator ull see it its a set of wires with a plug going into the block, move it around see if the oil light goes off or not.

his oil level is fine.
Op, since the light is flickering i will also suggest to check the connection at the sensor.

Yikes, sounds like you lost oil pressure and caused some damage.

If the car is running and you check the oil it should be all over the stick right? Well mine is not would that mean that the oil pump is out?

Re: oil light on (95_red_dc)
On my 94 ac, there is never any oil on the stick i add some and go for a while until my oil light comes on and add some oil and keep on going.. some blue smoke comes out the exhaust if i rev so im guessing its the piston rings

It depends on what you mean by "all over the stick". The dipstick has two marks near the end of it. The oil level is shown by the edge of where the oil coats the dipstick, and should be between those two marks. The difference between the two marks is exactly one quart. Most people keep it filled to the top mark (the one further from the end of the dipstick), so that if the car consumes oil, it can consume up to one quart before you notice it, and it will still be okay.
If you are saying that the dipstick is dry, that it doesn't show any oil on it, then the engine doesn't have enough oil. There is a serious risk of damaging your engine by driving it without enough oil. You need to put more oil into it, enough to fill it to the top mark. Then check your oil level regularly (at least every time you fill it with gas) to see how much oil it is consuming.
It's normal for cars with over 100K miles to use some oil, as much as a quart every 1000 miles. If that's how often you need to refill it (hopefully, you're then putting in half a quart every 500 miles, rather than waiting until it's all the way down to the bottom mark) then your best bet is to just keep checking the oil and adding more as needed.
If it's using more than that, then you need to take it to a mechanic or dealer (or DIY but it sounds like you don't have the experience) who can look for leaks, run a leakdown and compression test, test the oil pump, etc.

In your case, you have let your engine run dry of oil, as you explained in the other topic. And as explained there, the oil light is not a "low oil level warning light"; it is a low oil pressure warning light, and if you have let your oil level get low enough for it to light, your engine is probably already toast, from you driving it around with no oil in it. Good luck.

Your dipstick goes into your oil pan, thats where it gets it's reading of how much oil you have. It doesnt matter if your oil pump is out or not, if you have enough oil in your motor it will show on the dipstick.
the distance from the bottom of the dipstick to the first hole is also exactly a quart........so if you dont see any oil on that dipstick when you pull it out, wipe it off, put it back in all the way and pull out to check it then you are atleast 2 quarts low.
On my B18C1 I notice a huge difference in power and how my motor runs even if it's only a half a quart low. When I accidently let my motor get 2.5 quarts low by not checking it my oil light would start flashing and my car was extremely slow.....as in virtually no power.
I have come to the conclusion that you are not properly checking your oil..........your motor is over 2 quarts low, thats why your light is on and your motor is sluggish

Re: oil light on (95_red_dc)
I know how to check oil, and I know how to read the dip stick! Some one told me a easy way to test to see if your oil pump is working is to start the car and check the oil if its working properly oil should be all over the dipstick. Well I check it and there rally was not any oil on it. The oil is FULL I checked it when the motor was shut off! My oil light comes on when it starts warming up. It stays on when it is idling and above idle it is steady flash.

Test or get someone to test your oil pressure. Use the spot by the oil filter, where the oil pressure sensor is, to tap in.
