Default Oil consumption, 2001 GSR.... Went to the dealership today

For the last few months, my engine has been consuming oil. No leaks, but burning oil out the tailpipe at higher RPM's.

I go through 2-3 quarts between oil changes (not pushing the car hard, mostly highway miles) Every week or so I'm topping off the oil. It's getting hard on the wallet. Mobil 1 5w/30 isn't cheap.

I went to the dealership to have them take a look at the car. They changed the oil and replaced the filter. They want me to return to the dealership every 500 miles for the next 4000 miles. They want to keep a log of the oil problem. They need to do this in order to decide what to do next.

What do you think they'd do? One friend thinks they'll give me a new longblock engine. Another says they'll rebuild this one.

TIA.

The cheaper solution would be ideal for them...

But I personally would ask them for a new longblock if the problem is not cured after you take it in for short term checkups.

hey i also have a 2001 gsr with the exact samee problem and i hate it. I am running AEM cold air Skunk2 manifold, FPR, Cam Gears, DC 4-1 SS Headers, Apexi N1 Exhaust and it has all been tuned by Aieres at Dynamic Autosports. My car runs Strong and hard but burns sooo much oil so if they figure out the problem i would really like to know. It must be something with the 2001's. Good Luck

All of them burn oil, just a matter of how much. Might be poor valve guides.

I know VTEC crossover burns a bit of oil, but I'm not sure if it continues burning oil while in VTEC. I know I like to cross over a whole lot

I had this same problem with my 01 gsr. about 2qt every 3,000. now w/80,000 miles its blown. I spun a rod bearing most likely due to lack of oil.

My 96 gsr was using oil, I even posted a thread about it ( https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=340965 ). I changed the pcv valve and switched to 10w30 castrol drive hard, and i have gone 500 miles so far and have used almost no oil. I do drive it hard and love vtec so I know that is where the oil is going. In fact I just changed the plugs and they all looked perfect, go fig. I hope that you get your car fixed.

On a side note, I worked for volkswagen once. Their 2.0 or 2.slows as we called them would burn a QUART every 1000 miles like clock work. The only way that VW would allow the dealer to fix it was if the car started to destroy plugs and just make a freaking mess. Let me tell you when you tell a customer that the oil that it is burning is not a problem but a FEATURE it makes them just want to hit you. Again Good Luck.

well, if you think about it, the only things it could be that are worn are either the piston rings which when they go bad, will pass combustion into the oil which leads to the breakdown and thinning which leads to the oil being passed thru the exhuast...OR it could be the valve guides, when worn they will also help pass oil thru the exhaust. Unfortunately i have the same problem, but I have a 94 gsr with 126K and I beat the **** out of it....after 6 grand the blue smoke starts to show its ugly face. OEM rebuild and prep for 7 pounds this spring You should just go in there and request a longblock, don't get the run around by those guys.....demand to see the head manager of the service dept. and tell him what the deal is, you paid mad dough for that car and if you haven't beaten the bloody hell out of it, they OWE you a new motor, just my 2 cents

hope the dealer keeps a log and fixes your problem.

by the way, did you guys break in your engines using regular non-synthetic motor oil?

Sounds to me like the engine wasn't broken in properly. This is one of the symptons or problems of a engine not broken in properly.

I broke mine in with regular oil , thats what came in the car. I started having the problem from the beginning. I took it to a different dealership and they tried to tell me it was the crush washer on the oil plug. (total bs) After a while i just thought honda motors liked to burn oil, especially when you run them hard. I have not been easy on my car, but i thought it last more than 80,000 miles.

After over four years and 45k miles, I never had to add make up oil in my 98 GSR. I drive it hard once in a while and check the levels at least twice a month. Now, I am beginning to think that is weird if the rest burns oil.

I purchased this car with 13 miles on it. I broke it in textbook perfectly. I used conventional oil until 10,000 miles, then switched to Mobil 1.

I don't redline the engine, ever. If I do push it, I rev to 7800rpms, then shift. I rev-match when shifting, change the oil every 3000mi (with synthetic) and check all fluid levels and tire pressures. If I checked the oil level once a month, I would be running on almost empty oil.

Honestly, I'm getting tired of the oil consumption. Supersyn isn't cheap. Hopefully the dealership will do the right thing.

and give me a JDM longblock; less tolerances for error

{add}This car does see the occasional autocross or canyon run (the main reason why I modified my car). This consumption is whether I'm flogging the car or driving highway miles.

My '98 GSR burns about 1.5 quarts between oil changes, I brought it in while under warrenty but the bastards weren't hearin nothin' because I didn't pay them $35 to change the oil every time. I've just learned to live with it. I drive it hard, and I doubt the origional owner was smart enufght to break it in properly.

I actually have the same problem, but not as bad. I usually have to add a 1/2 a quart every 1 to 2 months. I also use Mobil 1 synthetic. With my car, if I have my A/C on recirculating and after I push it real hard, I can actually smell something through the vents. It's kind of a burning smell but not really. I have no leaks and no smoke out that back at any RPM. So I have no clue.

My car had 55 miles on it when I picked it up, so I don't know if it was broken in properly. I broke it in anyway though.

I have the same exact thing happening to me. I have 88k and no smoke or anything, but when I push it I get that smell. I have looked freaking every where and I can't find it.
