Noisy Power Steering Pump? Normal?
Hey Guys,
Just got my '95 GSR and I noticed then when I cold start the car (winter up here in Canada) the power steering pump seems very noisy. Sounds almost like the sound of steam coming out of a pressure cooker, like a hissing kind of noise. After it heats up it changes to an annoying light squeeking noise like an old GM truck with a noisy fan belt.
Just wondering if some noise from the power steering pump is normal? I'm sure it's not coming from the A/C Compressor because when I turn on the a/c and it kicks in the noise continues the same.
At first I was thinking maybe the timing belt was making noise, but it really seems to be the power steering pump... Could it be old fluid or anything? Guaranteed I need a new pump?
Anybody have this problem?
Edit:
I will most likely take off the belt this afternoon and see if the noise remains, but that means removing the alt belt as well. I figured I'd see if you have have any input at all.

Re: Noisy Power Steering Pump? Normal? (CRXTAZC)
Possibly the PS pump. I have heard the hiss, but not the squeek. The belt may be contributing to the noise. Other than that, I know using non-Honda power steering fluid can put the steering rack seals at risk for failure.

Re: Noisy Power Steering Pump? Normal? (Perfectionist)
Maybe I will try changing the fluid to honda PS fluid and see what happens.
The previous owner said the fluid was changed last year, but I am pretty positive that Honda fluid was not used.
I looked at the cross-section Acura part website and it showed that all of the seals and the bearing are sold seperately..
Maybe I should look into rebuilding my own pump with a new bearing/seals, assuming that is what is wrong with it.
Anybody rebuilt a teg P/S pump? They're damn expensive to buy.
So the constant hiss noise is normal when cold? Or just occasional? Seems to do it for the first 10 minutes of driving, once the fluid is warm it's more of a light squeek in the background...
