Default My b20b turns off while I'm driving it...

it's a 1990 acura integra gs with an engine swap to a b20b [1999 honda crv]

So at first my car had trouble starting a few days out of the week, this happened out of random.. Then or should I say now, my car turns off while I'm driving it, it will turn off out of random, I go to start it and it sometimes does start, most times it does not ill pull off to a safe area and wait to start it. It does not start up right away, it's almost like it has to cool down or something but my temp is regular, I checked to see if i unplugged the positive on the battery if it would turn off cause maybe I thought it could be the alternator and nothing, Someone please give me some help it's really dangerous and scary when it shuts off in the middle of the traffic.

Hey man I have the same problem with my 92 with a b18a. The problem I believe is the main relay under the dash. Go to your local parts store and pick up a new relay its about $60 bucks but I'm pretty sure that's the problem. Hope it helped!

Year of the car would help. Seems like its your ignition switch.

Had this problem on my daughter's 90' Civic Xi, it was the ignitor. Same symptoms, exactly.

I don't recall on the start, but I doubt it unless it was already hot from running previously. I do recall it being heat related, seemingly, so that it would run and then stop after a while and you had to let it sit before it would run again. Put in a new ignitor and never saw the problem again.

could be the ignitor. could also be the main relay. could also be the crank sensor.
could possibly be the ignition switch, but i doubt it as usually the symptom will be once the key is dropped back to run, it dies.
i would suspect the main relay or ignitor.
does the tach act erratic before it dies?
you can pull the main relay and test it, or open it up and check the solder joints. look closely for tiny cracks at the joints. the joints can be re-soldered
you should try pulling the codes first though

thanks for the suggestions crapitan, I heard from some people I know that its most likely not the ignitor since my car starts fine unless it turned off while I was driving it, I've also heard from afew people that the main relay could be the problem, im gonna have to check this out forsure, as far as codes, I wish I could check them but whom ever did my swap didnt plug in the check engine lights stuff

Suggestions and answers are greatly appreciated thank you guys, keep them coming.

I had this exact same problem with my gsr and I found out my distributor was going bad. I replaced the cap and rotor and it seemed to have fixed the problem.

i had this problem and it was the main fuel relay. No need to buy a new one just re solder the contact points.

*UPDATE*

I took out my main relay took it to afew guys who know alot, said it looked and smelled fine, I put it back in and took the car out that night to get gas, drove fine on the way there I pumped gas then BOOM, didnt start on me. I let it sit at the parking lot for about 1 hour or so, then took it home. I had this feeling that it had to do with the fuel, the car just didnt get the kick it needed and when it would die, it seems like it just got cut off... Finally I purchased a fuel filter! started the car, it started fine, took it around the neighbor hood fine, when I made it home my dad asked how it ran, I told him it was fine BUT i didnt push it, so i Push it to the stop sign and BOOM shuts off on me, the lights still worked the radio was on and idk wtf happend so we push it back to my yard, it wasnt starting as we pushed it, We get it to my house and BOOM it starts? HAHAHAHA
ok so this is what happend after that, I turned the car on and let it run for abit in my rive way then drove it around for about 30 minutes around the nieghbor hood and I let it sit will it was still on,after that it seemed to be fine, after all one of the great concerns was the car would turn off on me out of random, then it started turning off on my around the same spots, and the distance seemed to get shorter and shorter, so I think it shut off that first time cause it was the first time I pushed it that hard, it hasnt done it sense and I hope it doesnt, I have pushed it afew more times, but generally just been making sure it doesnt ie on me around the town, I took it out last night and it was fine, Hopefully my problem was resolved by simply replacing my fuel filter.

I will keep this thread updated on the preformance for another week to ensure the problem was resolved, just incase this can help anyone else with similar symptoms, cause this thread is full of helpfull tips, thanks alot again everyone and honda tech

DUN DUN DUN, Took er to school today drove fine, took her to eat at lunch cause I have time between classes and BOOM no start, so I waited a while and it started, went to take it to get a fuel injection in hopes that theres carbon build up and dirty gas being pumped through [crosses fingers] hope this helps, it hasnt turned off yet, and I took it back to school and back home sense then..

Will keep you updated.

Nothing worse than a problem that won't stay broke long enough for diagnostics!!!

It is your main relay. the solder has hair line cracks and when it gets hot the solder expands causing it not to connect until it cools down. There is a great write up on here telling you how to look for the hair line cracks and re solder them. When i took my main relay apart the first time it look fine until i found that article on what to look for. I had to do the same thing a few months ago on a 91 teg. I would post the link but my firefox decided to delete all my bookmarks and history today. If you find that article it will save u that 60 bucks.

Man that is a wierd issue. Do you know anyone with a 90-91 Integra? Maybe swap your distributor with a known working one. Or maybe the ignition switch is bad. Any check engine light on?
