Default Mushy Clutch – No leak though – Help Please

Here is my clutch problem…

About 10k ago, I noticed that the clutch felt mushy but could get it home. The next day, absolutely no clutch. It was leaking from the master cylinder and I replaced it (with an OEM part) and also replaced the slave (with a napa part) while I was at it. Bled the whole thing and it’s worked fine ever since.

Last week I noticed it felt like it was getting mushy again and when I was on level ground and put the car into first (no grinds) it would start moving forward (which of course indicates there is not enough pressure to fully disengage the clutch from the flywheel).

I could not find any leaks. The fluid level in the master cylinder looked normal. I bleed the system over the weekend and it seems like some of the pressure came back (just not quite like normal), but after getting to work today, I noticed it again feels like the clutch engages very close to the floor. It just doesn’t feel right (again, mushy).

My only thoughts are that I some how have fluid bypass in either the MC or slave. I checked the slave and it doesn’t seem to have fluid bypass. I would assume it would have been the slave considering it is not an OEM part. Since the MC is so new, I just don’t see how that could be the problem (and it too is not leaking).

Can anyone shed light onto where this problem might be?

Also, I bought the car used, I have no idea what kind of clutch is in the car, but it’s fairly worn out and it was always a very stiff pedal feel (which leads me to believe it is an after market clutch). Not sure if the actual pressure plate or clutch face wearing out could cause any of these symptoms.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I used an aftermarket slave cylinder (from Autozone) and it gave me problems after only 15k miles.

I will only use OEM from now on.

I used a Napa slave cylinder because it was less money but yeah OEM is always good (just pricey). I didn't see any leaks with mine though, so I'm not sure if that is the problem. Did you see a leak with your Autozone slave cylinder? What was the problem you had with yours?
