mechanic says my valves are fine????????
I went to the mechanic (my step-dad's friend)
this morning and told what happened:
I was goin like 75+ mph (3rd gear redline) and missed 4th and shifted into 2nd gear for a split second then slammed down the clutch.
I have now been driving it for 2 weeks and have not noticed anything wrong with the car except for alittle "ticking" and some members on honda tech said that ticking= "bent valve"
So i took it to the mechanic and I poped the hood so he could take a look at it and he said that it sounds fine. He also said if i had bent valve it would not start up or would be stalling out and puttering alot.
Question 1 - If i have a bent valve could the car still run perfectly fine? or is the mechanic right by saying, " the car would not be running like this if the valve was bent."
Question 2 - Can a valve be bent to a certain degree or is a bent valve just a bent valve?
Thanks alot guys, i know ive posted this bent valve stuff up alot but im really confused and need some guidance, i dont get my paycheck till friday so a compression test is not an option till then.

your mechanic if full of ****. if multiple valves are bent, it wouldn't run or stall out but if just 1 or 2 valves are slightly bent, you will hardly notice it. it would feel like the idle is slightly erratic and some vibration will be felt inside. you will also hear a puffing sound from the tailpipe. don't let anyone just listen to a car and tell you something absolute like there is nothing wrong. get a leak down test to know for sure, that will definitively answer this question. I only charge 1 hr labor for one so they are not too expensive. just spend the money otherwise it will cost you much more down the line. plus you cant put a price on the piece of mind you will have after knowing for sure your car is ok.
there are many degrees of bent valves of course, it all depends haw hard the piston hit them. a very slight bent valve would be hardly noticeable

question 1 - leak down or compression test??
question 2 - If the valve is bent what more damage could I have done to it? keep in mind ive been driving the car for over 2 weeks now since the incident.
question 3 - so even if the mechanic says the car sounds fine there could still be some damage internally? (he advised against the compression test)

You have to do a leakdown test to know for sure.
If you have a bent valve, it's possible that you can do more damage to the cylinder head by continuing to drive the car. If the valve is seating unevenly, you can erode the valve seat more making it harder to do the valve job. Also, if the valve isn't seating, it can't cool itself so it's possible that you can drop it into the cylinder. That would cost you the motor.
It's possible to have damaged valves and not have severe symptoms like stalling and such. In my opinion, a valve can be bent in some instances and still be fully seated allowing the cylinder to achieve compression. But in that case, a bent valve that is seating will still ruin the valve guide making it seat sometimes and not seating at all other times.
That's why your mechanic might be saying that the car is fine. You could be only getting random misfires in certain cylinders, which make the problem harder to spot.

Go against his advisory and do leakdown and compression test. They will tell you what is wrong. You cannot hurt anything by doing the tests.

I've done the 4-2 mis-shift twice now, both times I had a loud tap. I pulled off the valve cover, saw the rocker that was obviously loosened up and tapping, and tightened it to valve lash stats, as well as all the other valves I adjusted to make sure they were right, the car has been running fine. Just thought I'd throw in my situations.
