LSD: Options And Input
Hey all, I am looking to hear your perspective on LSD's. I have a gsr tranny in my car. I was thinking of adding an lsd with an LS 5th gear. That starts to get pricey. My next option is selling the gsr tranny and using that cash plus some of my own to find a b16/GSR lsd tranny or ITR transmission. Just hoping to get some other points of view and thoughts.
Thanks all

I've never understood wanting the LS 5th in a GSR tranny. My GSR is torqueless enough in 5th that I wouldn't want a taller gear.
For LSD options, available funds and intended use would be helpful for people making recommendations. There's always the Quaife if price is no object, and an OEM LSD / Blox on the other side of the cost spectrum. Auto-x, road course, or drag usage? Aproximate whp?

LS 5th won't really improve mileage. My 91 LS and my 00 GSR both got 28 highway, averaging around 75mph. The biggest enemy of mileage is speed, and we drive cars designed for a country with a national speed limit of 62mph.

Okay I wont bother to change the 5th. My third gear is scratchy so I might replace that when doing the LSD. The ITR LSD requires the final drive to be swapped. If I run the sir-g LSD I will be able to use my factory FD, correct?

A quick Google search makes it seem that the ITR LSD can be used with the GSR final drive as well, you just need to swap over to the newer bearings.

i had the same thought awhile ago. i had a gsr box and considered installing an lsd in it. the biggest problem was the 1-2 drop and the mileage i had on it. after adding up the expenses i decided to just buy a new ITR box which tightened up the gears and added the lsd.

Theres no reason to swap a ls 5th, if you swap a jdm b16 lsd you will need the final drive as well as the 1st gear its an awsome combo in my opinion i loved it, the lsd was the only real noticible diffrence. i later swaped in a mfactory 4.9 f.d and first gear and quafe lsd to really get faster excleration.

Yeah I want to stay away from OBX and Phantom grip, I want to do this right the first time. How much is my GSR box worth? That way I could sell it and use that money plus the money I was going to spend on parts and labor to buy a ITR trans.

That as of now is my goal. I might go boost or h2b over the winter. I am actually torn between the three. Well considering my car is a 97 tuning and NY inspections is my biggest concern.

people always say bad things about the obx cause they do not know better.. i have the obx lsd, and it works fine. When you buy it. all you do it take it apart and put new washers in it, and put it back together. obx lsd is better than the stock ones, if you put in the work. but if you don't.. they will give you problems.. obx lsd's hold a lot of power too.. i use one in my 475whp integra. no problems so far!!!!!!!!

400 if it's free of problems. 500 if you can prove it's under 80k miles or so and also trouble free.
every now and then a guy pops up on ebay with new in the box ITR transmissions for $1300. i know myself and another lucky soul in the R forum picked up one from him.
