Default Integra DC2 Axles: fwd, intermediate shafts installation, removal and more

Each axle shaft consists of a shaft with a Constant Velocity (CV) joint at each end. See Fig. 1 . Outer CV joint is splined to hub assembly and secured by a spindle nut. Inner CV joint is either splined to transaxle or slides onto intermediate shaft, which is splined to transaxle. Inner and outer CV joints are enclosed by boots. Inner CV joints can be repaired. Outer CV joints can be serviced only as an assembly. On some Integra, 2.2CL, 2.3CL and 2.5TL models, a dynamic damper may be used to reduce vibration.

Circlips and Stopper rings retain axle shaft in both inner and outer CV joints. A set ring retains inner CV joint stub in differential side gear or intermediate shaft. Outer CV joint stub is splined into wheel hub, and secured by a spindle nut.

FWD AXLE SHAFTS

Removal
1. Pry lock tab away from spindle nut. Loosen spindle nut and wheel lug nuts. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transaxle fluid. Draining transaxle fluid is not necessary if removing only left axle shaft. Remove front wheels and spindle nut. Remove damper pinch bolt and damper fork bolt. Remove damper fork.

2. Remove lower ball joint cotter pin. Back off castle nut until outer surface is flush with end of stud. Using ball joint puller, separate ball joint from lower control arm. Remove ball joint castle nut and ball joint from lower control arm. Pull steering knuckle outward. Remove axle shaft from hub assembly. If necessary, use plastic mallet to drive axle from hub.

DO NOT pull on inner CV joint; it may come apart. DO NOT damage seals.

3. Using a large screwdriver, carefully pry inner CV joint and shaft assembly outward to disengage set ring from groove at end of inner drive axle. Grip both sides of inner CV joint, and remove axle shaft and CV joint from vehicle. On models with intermediate shaft, tap inner joint with plastic mallet to remove axle shaft.

DO NOT disassemble outer CV joint. If service is necessary, replace it as an assembly. On inner CV joint, mark rollers and roller grooves for reassembly reference.

Disassembly
1. Remove axle shaft from vehicle, and place on work bench. Remove and discard inner CV joint boot bands. Slide boot toward outer CV joint for access to inner CV joint.
2. Mark axle shaft, inner CV joint housing, and spider roller for reassembly reference. Remove housing from spider assembly. Mark rollers and spider for reassembly reference. Remove rollers from spider.
3. Remove circlip retaining spider to axle shaft. Remove spider. Remove stopper ring. Wrap shaft splines with vinyl tape to prevent boot damage. Slide boot from axle shaft. Remove dynamic damper (if equipped). Remove outer CV joint boot bands. Slide outer boot from axle shaft inner CV joint end.

Reassembly
1. Thoroughly clean axle shaft, and inspect for wear. Replace all defective parts.
2. Install outer CV joint boot. Install dynamic damper (if equipped). Install inner CV joint boot. Remove vinyl tape from axle shaft. DO NOT install CV joint boot bands yet.
3. Install stopper ring into groove on axle shaft. Install spider onto axle shaft with reference marks aligned. Install circlip into groove. Pack outer CV joint boot with grease supplied with joint kit. Lubricate spider and inner bore of rollers.
4. Align rollers with marks made at disassembly. Ensure high sides of rollers face outward. Install rollers. Pack inner CV joint and boot with grease. Install housing onto spider assembly. Align reference marks made at disassembly while installing housing onto spider assembly. Adjust length of axle shaft.

5. Position boots halfway between full compression and full extension. Install NEW boot bands. Lightly tap boot band to reduce band height. Install NEW set ring onto end of inner CV joint. Install axle shaft.

Acura Integra DC2 Specs for both axles: 18.7-18.9 Inches (475-480mm)

Installation
1. Ensure length of assembled axle shaft is within specification.
2. Slide axle into transaxle or intermediate shaft. Seat set ring fully into groove. Check by attempting to pull axle out of installed position.

DO NOT pull on inner CV joint; it may come apart. DO NOT damage seals.

3. Pull hub assembly away from axle shaft. Slide axle into hub assembly. Install and lightly tighten spindle nut. Position ball joint into hub. Raise lower control arm with floor jack. Install ball joint nut. Tighten ball joint nut to specification.
4. Install and secure cotter pin. Remove floor jack. Tighten spindle nut to specification. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

DYNAMIC DAMPER
Dynamic damper must be properly positioned on axle shaft. Position damper so proper distance exists between damper and end of boot with axle shaft in a straight position. Measure at width "A". Distance must be within specification.

Dynamic Damper Installation Specs

* Integra
o B18B1 Engine: 0.9-1.1 Inches (24-28mm)
o B18C1 Engine: 1.0-1.2 Inches (27-31mm)

INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

Removal
1. Drain fluid from transaxle. Remove left axle shaft. Remove bearing support bolts.

To prevent damaging oil seal when removing intermediate shaft, hold shaft in horizontal position until shaft is clear of seal.

2. Lower bearing support. Remove intermediate shaft from differential. To prevent damage to seal, hold intermediate shaft in horizontal position when removing.

Remove intermediate shaft outer seal. Remove external circlip. Press intermediate shaft from shaft bearing. Remove intermediate shaft inner seal. Remove internal circlip. Press intermediate shaft bearing from bearing support. Inspect all components for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

Reassembly
1. Press intermediate shaft bearing into bearing support. Seat internal circlip into groove of bearing support. Install circlip so tapered end faces outward.
2. Press intermediate shaft inner seal into bearing support. Press intermediate shaft into shaft bearing. Install external circlip into intermediate shaft groove so tapered end faces outward. Press outer seal into bearing support.

Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill transmission.
