how to lock flywheel w/o prybar?
Still trying to get crank bolt off...friggen bolt...anyhow....
is there a way to lock my flywheel w/o sticking a prybar to the teeth of the flywheel? i heard about the tool u use on the crankbolt, but i don't have $$$ to purchase a tool like that... if i put the car in gear and then block the tires, could i then use a breaker bar to undo the crank bolt? would that work? or could that damage the tranny while i'm twisting the life out of the crank bolt?
it just seems like the flywheel cover is a little difficult to remove (not sure exactly, i just GLANCED at the cover for a few seconds)...

I'm pretty much in the same predicament you're in. I plan on just renting an air compressor and pneumatic impact wrench for a few minutes to get the bolt off.
Removing the tranny just to block the flywheel takes quite a bit of work. You might as well be replacing the clutch and flywheel.
Moroso Honda crankshaft pulley holder tool is $69.95 at http://www.summitracing.com.

take off your oil pan and put a block of wood between the balance shaft and your block. make sure you cover the wood with a rag. HTH

Re: how to lock flywheel w/o prybar? (IN VTEC)
I have tried using an air compressor w/ impact wrench...1st with 350ft-lb gun...then w/ ingersoll rand 600ft-lb gun...both w/ a 200psi compressor set at 90-120psi...guns are rated to work at 90psi...
i also took it to a shop that was nice enough to give it a try...he took his 3 guns to it and nothing...he recommended doing the prybar/flywheel thing....i haven't tried it yet so i don't know how well it works....

Re: how to lock flywheel w/o prybar?
i saw an old post from "vtec4gs" that sounded like it would work...but i don't know the details...maybe you guys know this trick too...
well he said basically i need to put a wratchet on the bolt...roll the car with the clutch pressed in, and then let go of the clutch...and it'll break the bolt...
it sounds like a good idea, i just don't know which way to roll the car...how far to roll it...which gear to be in...etc...

I'd imagine first gear otherwise you'd need some really strong guys...like 10 of them.
You would place the breaker bar (probably with somebody holding it to keep the socket aligned on the bolt) and then place the breaker bar end facing the front of the car and roll forward.
I just finished undoing my crank pulley bolt and changed the water pump and timing belt.
I used the flywheel cover way. It won't work for everybody (the way I did it) b/c I've got a Toda flywheel which has holes in it where you can stick a 10mm wrench into it and brace it against the rear engine/tranny stiffener. Stock & Spoon flywheels don't have the holes, so I don't know how you would brace it.
It involves removing the front and probably the rear stiffener, which requires removing the lower portion of the header (if not the whole thing depending on whether it's 2 piece or 1 piece) to get access to the flywheel cover.
I took pics of how I braced the flywheel with a 10mm wrench. I'll post them later.

Re: how to lock flywheel w/o prybar? (Scooby)
I tried two methods:
1) vtec4gs's method of pushing the car backwards while in 1st gear and ratchet handle hitting the floor (don't remember if that's exactly how it went). This didn't work, unfortunately. The bolt was on so tight that the socket twisted.
2) Posted the handle of the breaker bar to the car's frame. Slowly cranked the car a couple times and the bolt was off. The bolt broke, but it was off. Luckily, I could still take the half that broke off and insert it to unscrew the rest of the bolt. It was definitely turning the right way BTW.

You guys make me love the Moroso tool we have even more.
Its only 60 bux. You have to know of at least 4 people with hondas. Everybody pitches in an you are looking at 10-15 each, maybe less.
While I agree there are lots of other ways to get it done, look what a PITA it is.
The moroso toll has NEVER failed us. Well except for my friends 91si where it wouldnt work

Right on. I just wished I'd known sooner so I could have ordered the tool ahead of time. Next time there's an impending job, I'll order the tool well ahead of time.
