Default How do i prep front camshaft and crankshaft seals?

I am coming up on my timing belt job and have purchased 2x camshaft seals and the crankshaft seal. This is for the timing belt side, not distributor side.

How do i prepare to install these seals? Do i need honda bond? Do i need grease?

RTV or Honda-bond. But the aftermarket cam seals with the 3-4 O-rings, a little oil on the rings should do the trick.

As for the front crank seal, you will need to be able to get in there to scrape off the old RTV from the surface, and you might as well replace the oil pump while you're there.

Where do i hondabond the front cam seals?

If there is no RTV/honda bond on the crankshaft seal, i should be able to just pull and insert new one in?

The camshaft seals slide right on once the cam gears are off, just make sure you clean off all the oil around there. Also make sure the inner part of the seal where the spring is doesn't turn inside out when you push them onto the camshafts. The only place your going to use hondabond/rtv here is the corner of the cam caps, you won't need to put any on the seals them self.

Crank seal should be the same deal, your going to have to pry the old one out if your not changing the entire pump. Ive never seen rtv on the actual seal its self though. When you install the new one make sure it goes in evenly and to the same depth the original one was.

I find it easy to just use a pulley tool and pull off the cam gears and pull out the old seals and use a big socket thats about the same size as the seal and use a rubber mallet and tap the new seal flush.

You are the man.
Another question.....How do i remove the gear to install the crankshaft seal? Does it slide off the crankshaft shaft?

Parts madness!!

It should slide off. Depending on your motor it'll either have a woodruff key built into the gear or it'll have one that needs to be slid in to keep the gear aligned and from spinning freely.

There should be one on each camshaft also, make sure you dont lose them. Take note of the direction they come out also, the camshaft ones go in a certain way.

Its not difficult once you get the crank pulley bolt off, just take your time and double check the timing marks before you finish up.

Your gear should have the key built in, I think its the older motors that have the separate ones.
