Help: Wheel noise = bad wheel bearing?
There is a noise that is dependent on my speed, I know the tires are new and not cupped. How do I know this is wheel bearing (which side?) and not from axle bearing in the tranny?
Thanks in advance!

I am having the same problem... its a howling as i reach higher speeds. I dont think its my axles cause they're months old. I dont think they're my rotors, cause theyre weeks old, and im not a moron when reinstalling breaks. I think its my wheel bearing... I know i cant replace those myself, what do those usually run to replace?

i just bought a 96 integra and with the stock wheels on it had a bad howl from the front end so when i put my 18's on i replaced both wheel bearings after checking my brakes and axles. the howling was quieter but niether wheel bearing showed any sign of being bad. im kinda dumb-founded on the whole thing too. im just gonna cope with it i guess?

Alignment maybe?
Check wheel bearings by slaloming at like 20 mph. If you get a noise/vibration when slaloming in one particular direction, you should be abkle to determine the side. If not, raise the car and check for wheel play. (wabble the wheel to and from you by grabbing top and bottom of tire) ... there shouldn't be any play.
Wheel bearing is about 30$ USD to buy. You need a shop press to remove and replace them.

most likely it's the wheel bearing if it's making that howling sound as you're going faster. I replaced mine and it went away.
As for which side it's coming from, you have to figure that out. Just listen carefully.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if you turn right and it makes noise, it is the right side wheel bearing that needs to be replaced and vise versa with the left side. Not sure though b/c I am going thru the same thing. I have access to a bearing press, I just need to figure out how to do it and what to take off.

lol to check if your wheel bearing is bad, jack the car up. if you think its the front wheel then jack the front up. place your hands at the top and bottom of the tire and push and pull it. if u can feel some play then its bad. a good wheel bearing wont move at all. youll know what i mean when you do it. it will feel as if something isnt all the way tightened.

and i believe if its the right side, when you turn left it will make noise, and vice versa. when it gets really bad it will start making screetching noises.

Re: (menappi)
so, what is it when it makes a clicking sound everytime i hit a dip?
i know its not the axle.
my left wheel click every time i hit a dip or go down my driveway. its has like a 1.5 inch curb. before it hits the pavement.
cant explain the noise, just click click, or 'gahdonk'

Re: (confucius)
check you engine mounts. Sometimes when the mounts go bad, the eingine will sink a few cm's causing the cv axles to bunch and wobble. The clicking can be coming from the pressure of the ballbearings inside the cv shaft.

your wheel could be rubbing, yea that or your mounts are bad. happened to me. when i usta take turns i would get a crazy wobbling vibration noise/feeling. pull your wheel off and check to see if everything looks ok? maybe something is bent, or your strut is bottoming out?

Re: (yung98gsr)
I am having the same problem. At first. the noise only persisted through left turns. Now, the howling is constant, even when driving straight. I jacked up the front of my car today and checked both wheels by feeling if they have any movement. Sure enough, my left wheel has a little bit of play. Check for that before anything. Be sure to really jeck the wheel around inorder to make sure there is no play at all, bacause it sound to me that you are in the early stages of bearing failure, where i was 2 months ago. I am goint to see if i can get my bearings replaced tomorow. I dont think I can do them myself becuase they need to be pressed in.
What is the average cost to have bearing replaced in the front wheels? Any one know?

Re: (yung98gsr)
so this happens when you make a turn? it's like a scraping noise with me, kinda like the duct plate is scraping with the rotor when i turn. bent the hell out of the dust plate but still the scraping is there, could this be because of the wheel bearing(s)?

Yeah, only when I turn. It is not a scraping sound though as in metal on metal. It drones a little and its like a little vibrating machine is in the wheel.

I didn't know that. Maybe if the wheel bearing is complete shot then it will make noises when going straight. Mine is not that bad yet, but I still need to change it soon.

This will tell you which side it if there's no bearing play when shaking the wheel, but TAKE ALOT OF CARE
First chock the back wheels and put the hanbrake well on. Jack up one side and put in an axle stand or something stable for safety. Leave the wheel clear of the ground and able to spin freely. Get a friend to "drive" the car up through the gears to maybe 3rd or 4th and then clutch and shut off the engine. You will hear the noise from whichever wheel it is...or both if you're just unlucky!
THIS DOES NOT WORK ON CARS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Good luck
