Default Gs-r unsettling engine noises

So, I have been babying my car for a while now because im still too scared to have it die on me on the side of the road again. Attached is a video of my engine when it is still relatively cool. The first part is what i think sounds like noisy top end parts and that i need a valve job and possibly service my LMAs.

now, at the very end of the video, last 15 seconds or so I rev it up just a little bit. You can hear a really weird rubbing/knocking? sound. It sounds like it is coming from closer to the front of the engine and if i let the car sit at about 2900 RPMs the sound gets a good bit louder. When i get it up to 3k rpm, the sound completely goes away. To me, it sounds like a car I had that had a bad serpentine belt tensioner. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. I want to start making this car faster, but want to have reliability first. thanks.

Pull the valve cover and check mech. timing, then check valve lash, also check the exhaust manifold collector, might sound weird but i had a weird noise at right about 2500 rpm but past that it went away sounded like a rattling or even rod knock turned out to be a broken piece inside the oem header right at the collector, i swapped the header with another i had and the sound was gone. if sound is still there then do a comp. test and leak down test.

it gets louder when you go over the distributor area, those things are notorious for crapping it in MANY ways, take the cap off an inspect it. That doesn't sound like knock or the start of it something grinding or rubbing for sure.

Mine makes a similar sound on a cold start, but after a minute at idle, it goes away. I just did a valve lash adjustment thinking that was it, but it didn't solve anything. To be honest, mine sounds like its coming from inside the lower timing belt cover, or a pump/compressor bearing. I'm stumped as well.

I've been debating AC/PS removal for a while, and I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on it, hoping it solves the noise.

Although, one of my cam gears seams to be off a tooth. Could be just over analyzing, or it could be the cause. Could be the same for you.

Agreed. Definitely was much louder as he moved towards the dizzy.

I thought the distributor sounded loud as well, but when it warms up the sound is very minimal. The only sound that is still noticeable is the sound when I rev. I am in the process of posting another video for sound, but the last one took youtube 3 days to process so bear with me.

Yeah I would check your distributor. It sounds like the sound is coming from there. You might have to rebuild the coil or replace the distributor.

Not yet, but this noise is towards the front of the engine. The dizzy gets silent when the car is warm so I am trying to diagnose this noise first which sounds MUCH worse.

Something seems to be missing here.

So, i quit driving the car for months while i gathered funds to fix it. So happened that one day my wife needed the car while I needed to be at school and my beater was being serviced. I drove it very tenderly, and when going up a very small hill at 35mph, the car stops dead. Wheels lock up and my tires skid. I thought I broke the transmission because the car is still very difficult to roll even when out of gear and clutch in. I finally got around to pulling the valve cover and find an unwelcome surprise. I have a hunch that the original noise has something to do with the timing belt, tensioner or the crank pulley itself. I have all the old service records for this car and the t-belt was done only about 3 years and less than 30k ago. At any rate, what are the odds that i DONT have bent rods?

Well you most likely wont have bent rods but you might have bent your valves. Iv heard of stories of people not bending there valves but they werent at a very high speeds it seems so you just may have got lucky. I was on the freeway when mine snapped and the valves were all bent on the ex side. You can try and replace it with a new belt and tentioner pulley and hope there not bent otherwise you will have to at least rebuild the cylinder head.

Yes, valves. Typed all that up while trying to leave work hence the error. But yeah I'm crossing my fingers that the belt wrapped around the crank and stopped it before serious damage could occur. I am going to pull the head this weekend because one of the cylinders was >30 lower than the rest while barely still within minimum spec so I might as well do a head gasket while I'm in there. Of course if things look chewed up I'll drop the whole motor. Pics should be up this weekend.

Finally got everything pulled apart. Looks like everything is intact. Just need to go a little deeper and see if it was indeed the tensioner that failed.

spray brake cleaner in each port to flood it with fluid and check to see if it leaks under the bottom of the vales, they can still "look" fine but still be bent. The belt can snap from being old or too tight ect.. and it looks like thats what happened, hows the belt look? If its intact i would look into the tentioner next ect..

I vote valves only thing that would make real sense at this point, mind you valves are "cheap" in terms of block work.
