Default Good All-Motor B17A1 setup

I'm trying to decide between going turbo or all-motor with my 93 GS-R. I really love the respect that all-motor cars get, but I'm just scared that I'll spend an assload of $$$ and not be happy with the results. If I go turbo, I'm going to do a DRAG kit, and work towards running high 12s in the 1/4. But if I do all-motor, I want to high to mid 13s. I'm thinking with my car weighing around 2600lbs, that I'll need to produce at least 185 whp to achieve my goal. I would really be happy with 200 whp all-motor, but I don't know how hard it will be to reach that with my B17A1. I'm thinking CTR pistons, ARP rod bolts, Crower 403s, Crower dual valve springs and retainers, reprogrammed ecu with higher rev limiter and p&p the head. Will that get me close to my goal? What else will I need to do?

Do a search.

I've posted several combinations for the B17 motor.

go all motor with that B17.
forget the CTR pistons, just get OEM jdm ITR pistons if you want factory parts... better yet, bore out your cylinder walls to 82mm, matching pistons, new rods, balance the crank, p&p the head & intake manifold & throttle body, new valve job, 403 cams, 4-1 header with 2.5" collector and exhaust, straight pipe, lightened flywheel, new clutch, chipped ecu, and at least a fuel pressure regulator. blah...im off of work now. this is just my $0.02. peace.

Thanks for the response guys! Any idea on what kind of whp to expect from such a setup?

yer on crack!
What..CTR pistons aren't OEM? lol..
CTR pistons have to be the best OEM piston upgrade for a B16A/B17A. before my car got stolen (9.00), I had a B16A3 block stroked w/B17 internals + CTR pistons + B16 head + ITR trans w/4.7FD. I miss it to this day. It was a way fun setup too for road racing -- high compression/high gearing. The 4.7 helped out in the torque dept. Dynoed about 174whp. I could made more power if added some more goods, but I was pleased with what I had...

Don't bash CTR pistons...they are power makers.
Just make sure to sand down any sharp areas on the piston tops so hotspotting won't occur.

i know their OEM... i was just suggesting the ITR pistons if he wanted to stay OEM, because i personally think the CTR's are too extreme for the average person in a honda. im not bashing CTR pistons, i know they are power adders...but like i said to the average dood who doesnt know much, itll probably cause them future headaches from any damage they might run into from insufficient knowledge of building an engine. the B17 is a basically like a B16 with a slightly bigger stroke and flat top pistons. i dont think he would know how to have the CTR pistons installed and not run into slapping the tops of those pistons.

The Spoon balanced JDM ITRs give a 10.8:1 C/R ratio, which is ideal for a fast STREET car.

I believe the CTRs give 11.2:1 in a B17a, which isn't outrageous. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I was very interested in doing a Toda B setup until I realized that turning fast is more fun and less expensive (a little).

yea the CTR cr for the pistons is about right. btw...wat are u saying? toda b's would slow down ur car thru the turns??? i just imagine u would be exiting out of that turn much faster.

not to be **** or anything, but the SPOON ITR pistons are just balanced JDM OEM ITR pistons, if you didn't know.

CTR slugs in a B17 w/B16 head is about 11.4 cr also...way good combo.

couple ctr pistons running aggressive cams such as skunk2 stage 2 or jun 3's would yield very powerful results

for a comparison my friend is building his B17 right now hes just been working on the compression, installed USDM B16's with a gsr head shave 20thousands and stock everything else (other than I/H/E) last time at the track he ran a 14.4 this is in civic coupe. with some cams and headwork it'll pull hard

Thanks for that info. I think I had read something about that before.
Ok so here's what I'm thinking for my setup:
CTR pistons
Crower 402s or maybe 403s
Crower dual valve springs
Crower Titanium retainers
reprogram the P61 ecu (Katman I think I'll have to get in touch with you for that)
port & polish the head
Skunk2 cam gears
Apex-i VAFC
What do you think? Will the stock rods be fine? Should I get the shot peened? And will I need to get ARP rod bolts? I really appreciate all the help guys. Thanks alot.. keep the info coming.

i don't think u would need to shotpeen the rods...not in this situation...save that for high boost applications. stock rods should be fine

...and right into the D-Mod class.

Toda cams and v-train = nearly $2K. Way too expensive for me.

not to be **** or anything, but the SPOON ITR pistons are just balanced JDM OEM ITR pistons, if you didn't know.
When I was comparing prices of possible piston candidates, www.jdmhondaparts.com were selling the "Spoon balanced" pistons for $40 less than the unbalanced pistons. It wasn't for the Spoon name.

I have a 1991 integra GS. it has a ls head that has been ported and polished. bigger valve and retainers and springs, mild cams, the intake has been ported to match the head, bigger throttle body, bigger injectors, chipped ecu, intake and exhaust and it runs 13.8 not bad for all motor. hope this helps

That is really fast! Is that with full interior? What tires are you using? Have you ever had it dyno'd? This gives me inspiration. You're running times that I want to see my car produce.

That's how I feel too. I want to be fast, and I know that turbo would give me the speed I'm looking for, but all motor will give me the respect I want.

Naw, it's not that I just yearn for respect that much. I just feel like it's more of a challenge to have a fast all motor Integra with full interior. And if I accomplish that, I'll feel like I've done something.
