getting decibel reading for exhuast
i got a modified exhaust ticket for my apexi dunk cuz the chp officer said it was too "loud." from what i understand, aftermarket exhausts are now legal pending that they meet the 95 db requirement...is this correct? i read in a post about a month back that someone went to torrance chp and got a db reading from them and got his ticket written off. i dont know if its true or not, but w/ my past experience w/ police/chp is that they wont even give you a db reading if your exhuast isnt "OEM." i dont know jack about decibels, but would my exhaust be over 95 db? cuz if it is, then i'll save time and just find a stock gsr exhaust instead of making myself look like an idiot in front of an officer. has anyone ever fought their exhaust ticket? i would really appreciate any and all help. i gotta go to court october 1st, and time is running out....yes i know i'm a procrastinating idiot, but oh well. sorry for the long post, and TIA.

the officer is supposed to have to be able to actually be able to prove your exhaust is over 95 db before giving you a ticket. I would just fight it in court

Radio shack sells decibel meters...buy one, measure your car and then return it to radio shack or something, they arent too expensive

Josh Jacquot wrote a great column in last month's SCC. Or maybe this month. Or 2 months ago. It was recent. Basically he said it was determined the law as written was basically unconstitutional and could be successfully challenged in court. I suggest you try to find the article in Sport Compact Car, and I'm sure there has also been a ton of legal documents released.
Good luck. It's a crock!

You really need to find out how a decibel reading is recorded.
You can have a db meter about a foot back at idel, and will read about 55-70 db. not that loud at all. if you have the engine at about 4k will be around 85-90
you can step back 10 ft and it will drop about 20-30 db.
It MAINLY depends on 2 things:
1) how far back u are reading it
2) THe engine RPM
between those it can very diff ratings

Agreed. You need to find out how the law states the 95 decibel rule. If they specify an SPL, then they also need to specify a distance at which it is recorded. I have a sould level meter from Radio Shack ($35). I use it to calibrate my home theater, so it was well worth the money. I don't know if you'd have other uses for it or not.

I think in that SCC article it was also mentioned that there is a signicant amount of sound produced by the intake. I'm not in Calif. and don't know the exact law, if it is just your car that can't surpass the 95db. limit or just the exhaust that can't surpass it. I do notice some cars with just an intake sound just as loud as some cars with an exhaust system.
Anyhow that is something else you might want to keep in mind.
