Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread

Re: Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread
Finished spraying paint last night and put most of the car back together today except for a few parts that would be touching the fresh paint.
I didn't install the wing yet because I want to let the paint harden more first.
I gave up trying to get the hood perfectly smooth.
Gloss isn't perfect but that's a result of the spraying conditions. Once I hit it with a buffer it should shine pretty well. I also really like the way the bumper looks with the holes for the license plate sanded flush and filled in.
Installed HID projectors and painted the projector shrouds black. I like the way it turned out, looks a bit different but still subtle.
I really like the way the sedan rear door handles look.
There's quite a few dust specs and stuff in the clear coat, I'm going to wet sand the whole car to flatten them out and then buff it to a shine. Not too terrible considering it's the first (and last) car I've sprayed though. I understand perfectly why good paint jobs cost so much now.

god damn that things came a long ways, looks pretty damn good now.
are you gonna paint the grill part of the bumper black or just leave it?

You certainly fixed up that turd. I'm sure everything you've said about your paint job is true but, we can't see any dust specs or roughness on your hood haha. Looks great mang

Re: Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread
Appreciate the compliments!
The plan is to paint the grill black, but I'm going to let the white paint harden properly before I go spraying anything else on there. The last thing I need is for the black paint to react badly with the white paint and wrinkle all over the place.
The main issue with the hood is the waviness in the sheet metal. It's not horribly out of whack though so the white paint does a good job of hiding it.

I kind of like the grill white. Is painting the grill black common practice with OEM bumpers?
Have you thought about de-badging or switching emblems?

Re: Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread
The inside part of the grill is unpainted from the factory, but my bumper had a respray at some point in the past and it was painted, so I just painted over all of it with the intent to spray it back to black afterwards.
I thought about swapping badges but there's too many people putting crappy red Ebay Honda badges on these cars as it is, so I'm just going with the Acura badges.

Awesome transformation so far. I'm sure the painting was a pain, but from the pictures it looks great, and like you said, once you buff a bit it should shine up nicely. What's next in your plans for it?

Re: Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread
New wheels and a high compression B20 are up next. I'm leaning towards bronze Rota Slipstreams or bronze MB Weapon wheels. I might end up painting my calipers red despite it being ricey, just because I love the white/bronze/red color combination so much, as seen here.
Also, here's some better pictures (but still a crappy location). Once I get it all buffed and shiny I'll have my brother bring out his DSLR for a proper photoshoot.

Re: Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread
A few updates, my front turn signals were in pretty bad shape, they were very pitted and one of them was cracked and leaking. I really like the amber turn signals found in 98-01 Integras but Honda never made any for the 94-97 front end, so I gambled on a set of cheap aftermarket ones and they seem to be pretty good. They fit perfect and so far don't seem to be leaking.
I also got my tax refund last week, so I pulled the trigger on a set of JDM ITR Recaro seats in red. The RSX seats were a safety hazard due to my poor welds as well as the fact that my head was smashed against the ceiling. When I got them they were pretty dirty but they cleaned up well with just distilled water, a plastic-bristled brush, and a vacuum. I'm going to buy some red leather to replace the dirty tan cloth door inserts so I think the color combo should look pretty good when I'm done.
I also replaced the oil pan gasket, but the new one is still hemorrhaging oil so I'll have to redo it using red RTV to help the seal.

myHondaHabit Oil Pan Gasket and Stud Kit: B-series
if your torquing the nuts correctly and the oil pan gasket is still leaking id look at purchasing the gasket in the link above..i had the same issue with those felpro gaskets

I'm 85% sure that it's Fel-Pro, but I threw out the packaging months ago. It is actually rubber, that picture just doesn't show it too well.

Re: Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread
Same, had a felpro on my prelude. Never sealed ever from new. Ended up just buying an OEM one. After many experiences with cheap OE gaskets and even semi decent aftermarket brands I've given up buying anything other than OEM. It's never worth it.

Weird, I have a felpro on my h22 and no leaks after dyno run and many startups.... It's not blue like this one though

Re: Fixing Up a Turd: A Build Thread
Another minor update: I've started wetsanding and polishing the car and I didn't realize just how bad the orange peel was until I saw the car without it.
Here you can see the polished door next to the untouched quarter panel.
And here's the reflection of other stuff in the door.
The hood.
In the past, I swore I'd never use seat covers, but that was before I thought about what would happen if I spilled a protein shake on a $500 seat, so now I have ugly seat covers. At least they're fitted and are easy to take off and put on.
I'm also gearing up for my long overdue JDM high compression B20 swap. I'm going to drive to Dallas to pick up the motor on Saturday and I've ordered a Exedy clutch kit, master cylinder, slave cylinder, MyHondaHabit oil pan seal, OEM tie rod boots, OEM valve cover gasket, OEM rear main seal, and a Gates timing belt/water pump/tensioner kit.
And unrelated, I also sucked it up and forked out the money for new window bottom moldings for the doors, mine were pretty trashed from old age and I broke almost all of the clips removing them the first time.
Did I miss anything on the list of stuff to take care of while the motor is out? I think I might do the motor mounts as well since who knows when it was done last, and might as well do the front wheel bearings as well... Also, what's the cheapest way to tune the engine that isn't complete garbage? I'm going to do a few bolt on mods to the B20 and I'm not a fan of running a B18 map, even if it supposedly works fine. What I'd like to do is put it all together, spend a few hundred on a proper dyno tune, then just forget about it and drive it.
