Default Cranking but not starting, plus white smoke

Car - 1992 Acura Integra RS 1.6 L w/ around 175,000 miles

Some background - About 3 months back, I used Chevron Fuel Injection cleaner and I always stick to Chevron gasoline, 10 minutes later I turn off the car. Try to start it again, and it started shaking, I hit the gas pedal, and a bunch of white smoke started coming out, smelled kinda like glue. Eventually died out, moved it to an open space, waited a couple minutes, started it up again, immediately shifted into drive and started moving, white smoke stopped coming and it ran fine.

Throughout this time, it had an intermittent overheating problem and I kept losing coolant quickly, probably went through one bottle over every two weeks.

Fast foward to four days ago, I tried to start it up, it started cranking but not starting, and a load of white smoke was coming out the back, then one of the back hoses busted and coolant leaked everywhere and was all over under the hood.

Weird part, to me at least, it wouldn't start then, but after it was towed, I'd say a 20-minute drive, he dropped it off, I tried to start it up again, and it did without any white smoke or issues. Replaced the hose, then yesterday it gave me the same start-up problem, it kept cranking, and on the third try it started up. Checked the exhaust, and white smoke was coming out for a good 30 seconds, but it normally doesn't do that. Now today, it'll crank, but won't start, and white smoke continually comes out the back when it's cranking, plus I start smelling fuel or what not.

Friend checked it out and said I should replace the cap and rotor, and maybe the spark plug wires, since when I click to #2, you can hear the fuel fill, but that there possibly is no spark, but that it most likely has a head gasket problem as well

Thing is, when I can get it to start up, once I get it into drive and the coolant is at a good level, I do not see any white smoke at Idle, nor does it give me overheating problems, although I do notice after extended driving the fan will run after the car is off, I dunno if that's normal.

Post is kinda lengthy, but that's how it's been with this car, a long, lengthy roller coaster that might lead me to buying a new engine....

your friend is an idiot

the coolant is burning off. most likely caused by the head gasket faulting... i'd be interested in seeing what your compression is

Mistype

As for the engine, the engine was replaced two years ago with one salvaged from another DA.

I see, I'm just starting to learn about DA's and car maintenance. It's my first car, so it's a learning experience I guess. But yea, it was a blind purchase.
Would that have contributed to the problem in any way?

I'd just like to know how he's an idiot, not being defensive, but curious so I can tell him wussup.

How'd I go about finding out about the compression?

you go buy or find someone with a compression tester. there is a specific way you need to test the cylinders. as for your friend, his logic regarding the plugs, wires, cap, rotor is flawed in that YOU ARE POURING WHITE SMOKE OUT YOUR EXHAUST. burning coolant = white smoke.....while all those igntion components do aid in starting your vehicle, lack of compression will inhibit this....and guess what causes lack of compression? a bad head gasket for example...this rant is directed at your friend, not at you

Your friends an idiot because first of all spark and ignition wont make your car pour whiute smoke, a blown head gasket will. plain and simple. Your antifreeze is leaking into your cylinder and thus causing the violent shake/ misfiring feel and white smoke. I wouldn't drive it anymore, you could warp the head and tottally fuc.k your engine. This hapopened to me when i first got my dc. I blew a radiatior hose, car got hot, popped the gasket and stalled out. waited a few minutes and started it, mobbed it far as i could till it died and towed it home and slapped a gsr head on and called it good.

All right, I see. Thanks for the explanation

You got any idea how much replacing a blown head gasket would cost me? Just about everyone I've talked to told me it would cost close to $1,000 with labor included, but I'm feeling that it's a load of bs, not to mention the fact that they all WANT my car

They just recommend for me to buy a new engine because there might be something else wrong with the engine and whatnot. AFAIK, the engines I could get would be VTECs with about 35-45,000 miles on them

I was looking at this, but don't really have a clue of it's relevance to the problem/if it would help: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

Thanks for all the feedback so far guys.

Well, I did my own head work, which I would recommend if you have a honda buddy, not the buddy formentioned, and a repair manual. An easy way out is to buy a cheap swap for it (b20, b18b go for 500-750) And that gasket kit is for a gs-r. Make sure you have the right parts. Locate the engine code stamped on the front of your block and use only ther parts for that code. Should be b18a1, b18b1, or a b17 if it has vtec

Sounds like a plan, but what would you really recommend?

Take care of the Head Gasket problem, or drop $1500-$2000 for another engine? Place I would be getting it from is reputable, gets them from Japan, and is backed by a Warranty.

I got a buddy who can swap engines.

lol, that's actually the place I'm referring to. I'm really close to it and my friend that does engine swaps is a regular there.

I guess it's time to save up, ahhh, at least I'll know what I'll be running under the hood this time.

Thanks guys, this might turn out becoming a long overhaul project....which gives me more time with my car
