cooling fan/overheating problem 97 GSR
wussup fellas, I have dual fal fans that were on my car when I bought it. for some reason, just today, it started to overheat. popped the hood and the fan isnt turning on. I checked all the fuses and they were good. How do I check to see if it is a bad relay? or fan or switch? I dont know how to hard wire it to see if the fan still works but it has been up until today. The ac fan still comes on when the ac is turned on. I tried to do a search but couldnt find how to hard wire or however you say it to check the fan. Thanks for your help fellas,

Re: how to hard wire cooling fan 97 GSR
Sounds like the coolant temp switch is faulty.
To hardwire the fan, take a run of wire (14g) and put it from the fuse box on an ignition source to splice it into the hot lead on the fan's plug.

Re: how to hard wire cooling fan 97 GSR
might need a new fan relay. i would just run two wires into the plug of the fan itself, and then run them to the battery, neg and pos. if the fan works, could be a fuse, relay, or a temp switch.

tried to run it str8 to the batt, fan didnt turn on, switched the plugs to the ac fan, the ac fan only turned on when I switched ac on. it has dual fal fans and the way it has been working is that everytime I turn on the ac, the ac fan would turn on and constantly run until I turned the ac off.....

change......... I went to the wires and spliced them to the plug and the fan came on. so the fan works. I guess when I was touching them earlier to the inside of the plug I guess I wasnt gettn good enuf contact. but the fan came on when I spiced into the wires

Re: cooling fan/overheating problem 97 GSR
start the car and let it idle till the fan comes on , make sure the fan spins the right way.

k, made sure its spinning the right way, still overheats when I take off. its fine at a idle. as soon as I get into like 2nd gear drivin down the road she shoots to hot.....earlier it looked like the needle on the temp gauge was going up and down then it would shoot to "H".......im puzzled and a little frustrated.

Re: cooling fan/overheating problem 97 GSR
if the thermostat isn't opening to let coolant into the motor, it doesn't matter what your fan is doing to the coolant in the radiator.
i am pasting from my service manual, pardon the weirdness...
Fan Motor Test
Disconnectth e 2Pc onnectofrr om the fan motor.
Test the motor by connectingb atteryp owert o the
B terminal, and ground to the A termlnal.
lf the fan motor fails to run smoothly, replace it.
NOTE: The illustrations hows the radiatorf an.
if you look into the connector with the notch facing towards the sky, the A terminal is on the left.
the fan is supposed to kick on at 196 degrees F, or rather the fan switch delivers juice to the fan. the switch could be bad, or the thermostat could be bad.

the fan switch test says hang the fan switch in coolant and add a thermometer. heat the coolant and make sure the switch closes (passes juice) at 196 degrees F

what is the OEM temp? autozone has 3 different thermostats with different temperature settings. one for 170 deg, 180 deg, and 195 deg.........the 170 deg one is only 13bux and the 180 is 8bux 195 deg has to be special ordered

Re: cooling fan/overheating problem 97 GSR
aight, first off, let me just say "thank you" to all da fellas who helped me. I finally got it straight. Turns out that I had some loose wires on the plugs to the fans(figured that out with a voltmeter) then figured out the fan switch was bad. took out the thermostat and tested that since I was there, thermostat was bad, stuck closed. replaced that, she runs like a champ...........THANKS again to everyone who helped.
