I’m going crazy, crossing my fingers someone can help.
I have a ‘92 Integra with 160,000 KM’s (something around 90,000 miles), with its original engine.
I’ve looked everywhere, and I can’t seem to find anyone who has had a similar issue. I’ve changed more parts than I’d like to think about, and cleaned the few that I didn’t swap.
My symptoms are:
Everything runs decent when the car is initially started up. About 5-10 mins into its first trip, any sort of tap on the gas makes the engine surge to around 2000-2500 RPM, and the car goes like 30-40KM/H without even touching the pedal. This keeps going until you stomp on the gas, which makes the revs drop. Until you touch the gas again, then the whole thing repeats. This happens for around 3-5 minutes, until the CEL comes on, and then the surging stops. Until you turn the car off/on again. It starts up with no CEL, and then the surge happens (basically right away this time), and happens for the same amount of time, until the CEL finally comes on, and everything relaxes.
I’ve checked the code, and am getting a 12. I changed the EGR valve, didn’t help. The vacuum lines to/from the EGR are fine. I also don’t know how a malfunctioning EGR would cause the surge.
It’s driving me insane. Any ideas??!!

this sounds like when my timing belt jumped a tooth on the intake side.
check crank and cam alignment. drove me crazy for weeks.

sounds like a throttle body issue, perhaps the throttle plate sticking , or a vacuum leak, or bad idle air control valve. Is this the factory throttle body ? Try cleaning the throttle body plate, and checking for any binding of the plate in the bore after the car is fully warm. If all of the vacuum lines look proper then it could be the idle air control valve dirty or faulty.

I'd check the following:
- TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
- MAP Sensor
- IACV (Idle Air Control Valve)
- Throttle Body - Make sure it's not sticking.
- Timing

Loosen your throttle cable up a good bit. It just sounds like you have it too tight. Loosen it passed the point where you know it's not opening the TB plate and see if that fixes the issue. Then just re adjust it so that it's tight but not opening the plate at idle

Also check the fast idle valve if you have one, when they get stuck, they let too much air in. This usually only happens at idle though, which would lean one to think it’s more likely a throttle cable/throttle body butterfly issue as previously mentioned, then move on to the TPS, IAC, MAP, etc. Essentially, the PCM (ECU) is seeing too much air coming in (in relation to throttle position), and tries to compensate by adding more fuel, or your t-cable or tb butterfly is sticking and not springing back/shut like it should.

There is an eacv and an iacv on the 92
This is the electric air control valve
This is the idle air control valve, has 2 screws on the backplate that can be removed and the valve can be tightened with a flat head screwdriver
